Let's cut to the chase. It's makeover week!
The Tyra Fluff
However, before the makeovers, Tyra must give one of her wannabe-Oprah heart-to-hearts about how she was told she was too fat to be a model when she gained her curves. Fear not, though, because Tyra - conqueror of all adversity - refused to succumb to the pressures of the industry and found different campaigns with the assistance of her mother. We know about your Sports Illustrated Cover, Tyra. But she reminds us anyway. This whole speech is only vaguely connected to the makeovers anyway (the theme being that change can be good).
The best part of this whole talk is that Tyra explains how she came to this revelation over pizza. So Tyra gives the girls pizza...and the irony is...none of the girls eat it (I watched very closely and seriously, some put it on their plates and maybe 2 of them took a nibble)!
The talk is followed by a Snow White skit where Jay Alexander is more disturbing than usual as the Wicked Queen/Witch. However, the most impressive part of the skit is that Jay Manuel carries Tyra out. Seriously. As Tyra previously admitted, she's "curvy".
Mystery makeovers again (they did this last cycle), where the girls only learn of their new look after the makeover is completed.
The most drastic changes were probably for Samantha (who looks about 5 years older and 10x more modelesque with the short blond hair), Clark (who went from thinnish blond to thick jet black) and of course, Elina. I know people are going to be divided on Elina, but I think her makeover is for the worse. I also like Marjorie's transformation from light to dark more than Clark's.
You can check out all of the before and after shots here.
However, the most intriguing part of the makeovers were not the makeovers themselves, but Tyra's 'fairy-godmother with a British accent' bit, courtesy of a freaky pop-up magic mirror in the bottom left corner of the screen. Is it me, or has ANTM gotten increasingly campy this cycle (especially with the Institute of Technology bit from the premiere)?
In the continued deja vu of this episode, there's another WalMart makeup challenge (which no matter how they dress it up just sounds so trashy...sorry...but I hate you, WalMart), which we also had as recently as last season.
I will say that Hannah-who-I-previously-thought-had-a-90-IQ made a surprisingly good cue-card free commercial, and wins the challenge.
Photoshoot=swimsuits. I saw more ribs than I needed to...
Nothing too exciting occurred in judging, either. I'm somewhat surprised that Tyra hasn't been making the girls do crazy things yet and then accuse them of not taking it seriously or not committing themselves fully to the ANTM cause. Something to look forward to.
In terms of the photos, Elina's is deemed best, and Tyra insists that her new look makes her "racially ambiguous" - which is supposed to be good, I guess. I maintain that Elina looks one step closer to Ronald McDonald. Other early calls include Cheese (Lauren Brie), Samantha and McKey.
Bottom Two: Brittany and AnnaLeigh. I thought based on overall performance up until now, AnnaLeigh would certainly be out, but it is Brittany that is sent home. Tyra instructs her to study European fashion magazines. Is this advice really all that helpful now?
So...whose makeover do you like the best? The least? Where do you fall on the Elina makeover? Do you agree with me that she is the one girl Tyra managed to make uglier this cycle or do you think that it somehow, strangely, works?
