James Cameron only has himself to beat now.
Just three weeks into release, the director's sci-fi epic Avatar has become the second-highest grossing film worldwide of all time, giving Cameron the top two spots on the list.
On Wednesday, Avatar upped its global tally to $1.13 billion to surpass the $1.12 billion haul of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, according to Box Office Mojo.
Cameron's Titanic still holds the all-time record with $1.84 billion, accrued in 1997 and 1998.
On the domestic front, Avatar is projected to pass Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith this weekend as the 10th highest-grossing film in U.S. box office history. Avatar is currently in 12th place with $374 million, behind Return of the King ($377 million) and Sith ($380 million).
