Grey's Anatomy Shocker: Defeated Derek Calls it Quits! - Featured

At this rate, Meredith might not ever get to call herself Derek's fiancee, let alone blush as his bride.

Grey's Anatomy is MIA for the next few weeks, but the ABC serial will return with a bang on March 12, when Derek decides to call it quits.

Already, of course, Dr. Shepherd is in a dark place, having made some questionable (and ultimately unsuccessful) calls in the treatment of a pregnant patient played by guest star Jennifer Westfeldt. Adding salt to that wound, he comes to discover that over his illustrious career, more patients of his died than he originally thought - prompting him to elect to hang up his stethoscope.

Can anyone save McDreamy from this professional nightmare? Is the Chief about to lose his acclaimed brain surgeon? Derek's resolve seems real - I mean, just look at his strife beard.

Meredith, of course, refuses to give up on her man as he beats himself up. But will she be able to entirely undo his defeated demeanor?

What's your take, Grey's fans? Can MerDer make it through this latest mine field? Or, just maybe, Derek's downward spiral will be more than his honey can handle.

This is what ABC does people. It takes a heroic character throws some moral dilemma at them, then they grow a beard and become despondent, only to retake the hero mantle again. Think Greg Grunberg's character in Alias or more recently Jack from Lost. Beard, check, sense of hopelessness, check, oh but wait, who's the hero once again? Speaking of checks, the one that ABC writes for Patrick Dempsey after every episode is WAY to big for him to leave the show. Mark my words, McDreamy will spiral into self pity (BTW hasn't Grey's already beat that pony to DEATH I mean Izzys going int her second round, George had one, Meredith was suicidal, even Baily and the CHEIF have had their own pity parties) then after he has spent enough episodes wallowing that it starts to get annoying, and his growth fully obscures his McChin, some patient will come into Seattle Grace who is inoperable, but then Meredith, who has been doing her best to be there, but whom Derick has kept pushing away, will convince Derick to try and WOLA, McDreamy makes his comeback, and all will be well. Then we no doubt will be teased with a Grey wedding, since ratings know nothing better than a wedding episode we will probably hear here come the bride, and see a shot of a wedding dress in the "scenes from the next episode", then, because the MerDer wedding is too big a carrot for the produces to just give away, it will turn out to be Lexipedia/McBrokemydick union.

I would love to see Derek go into private practice for an episode or two and have Addison help him through this time. I think that could be an exciting storyline and i would get to see more of them together.

Despite what Darthbob100 said above about the whole self pity pony being beaten to death, i have to say, im LOVING the McDreamy break down. He's always been mr. perfect...he's always been 'McDreamy' and i think its great that we can finally see him as a person who makes mistakes and who really isnt perfect.Personally i think it will stengthen Mer-Der's relationship coz he's never been able to understand meredith's tendencies towards darkness and now that he's going to that place i think it will probably help him understand her a bit better. not to say that there wont be many episodes of problems before that point...Also, it'll be a real growing experience for meredith's character...she having to be the beacon of hope instead of the 'dark and twisty' one. i think all around this is a fantastic storyline that can be built on in so many different ways. so way to go grey's writers! keep up the excellent work!!p.s. i really hope the lexi/mark wedding isnt true...it sounds horrible!! and i think i can wait a long time for the mer-der wedding...

Darthbob, you nailed it there. I don't know what comes after death but the GA storylines have certainly familiarized themselves with the territory. Why are people still watching????? Five seasons of unresolved storylines pretty much did it for me.

i absolutely love the idea of Derek breaking down, it was an inevitable storyline. Oh howth the mighty have fallen. I'm hoping Meredith will be strong and won't give up on him.
I think there will be the compulsory few episode's of self-pity and wallowing in the dark but then Meridith will show Derek the light. She will show him that she isn't so dark and twisty anymore that through his influence she has become stronger and literally looks for the better things in life because of his love and never ending hope for her and them.
Excellent work grey's writers.

I don't want this to be the end of derek, but honestly i would quite like it to be the end of merder. The constant back and forth of her stoic, clinical attitude to their relationship and his almost light hearted but truly loving heart is really starting to annoy me. Don't get me wrong, I love Grey's Anatomy just as much as the next person but i'm just not feeling the connection between the two of them the way it used to be.

Now that they don't have to fight for each other anymore and they just have each other all the time, it gets boring. For them I mean. Little things start becoming big things and so on. Personally, I would like to be surprised. I'll watch the next episode with no expectations, so as to not disappoint myself. I just don't want the season to finish.

I'm loving the storyline and desperately want to see a (successful non-Yang/Burke style) MerDer wedding in the future no matter how distant it is. I'm hoping that Derek's leave is only VERY temporary and would not be too pleased if he was on private practice... only because of the OBVIOUS (check last episode) thing Addison still has for him... seeing as how Alex had to stop her from rushing to him after his fight with McBrokemydick. I'd be moderately disappointed if Izzie is killed off, because I don't know if Alex will be able to pick up the pieces and it was nice to see the caring side of him that allowed him to fall in love with Izzie- I love them as a couple. I'm also eager for the next lesbian match-up for Callie.
I also can't help but point out hollybeth's blooper: "oh howth the mighty have fallen"... did that sound a bit wrong when you wrote it? probably because it's "how the mighty hath fallen". Despite what you may have seen on comic renditions on TV, ye olde English wasn't actually spoken by adding -th to the end of every word- sometimes it just sounds rediculous
