No, it's not some sort of suicide attempt. It's a scene from this season's One Tree Hill and it involves one of the series' new cast members, Robert Buckley and Center Stage actress Amanda Schull.
Rescue divers, jet skis, small boats, the U.S. Coast Guard and area law enforcement were all on guard to make sure everything went smoothly last week as the two One Tree Hill actors jumped off the Wrightsville Beach bridge. A man was first spotted jumping off several times, landing in the slick-calm water of Banks Channel, before Buckley, who plays Nathan's agent Clayton Dawson, was spotted holding hands with Schull while pretending to jump a couple of times and yelling, "We'll be there in a minute."
Judging from what onlookers have witnessed, it certainly appeared as if Buckley and Schull were trying to rescue someone. But that scene, which is part of the new season's seventh episode, almost didn't happen.
Wrightsville Beach, understandably, didn't allow it since the town didn't want to accommodate One Tree Hill producers' request to shut all four lanes of the Causeway Drive bridge over Banks Channel for the scene, given that it would create too much disruption to traffic flow. On the other hand, the N.C. Department of Transportation, which had to sign off because it normally is illegal to jump from a DOT-controlled bridge, said the show could. But after much discussion, the two parties finally reached an agreement last week, compromising to close two lanes heading east, instead of the whole bridge.
In the actual scene, Buckley and Schull held hands and jumped feet-first into the water while One Tree Hill veteran James Lafferty, who plays Nathan, directed the scene, which wrapped up just in time before a heavy rain shower soaked the area.
