Julie Benz Talks 'Dexter' Season 4 Finale

The shocking season 4 finale of "Dexter" was was kept as a secret until last minute that the cast alone had to scramble in the dark. [Spoiler Alert] Killing Rita Morgan was especially devastating for Julie Benz who portrays the character for four years. In an interview with TV Guide magazine, she said she was even initially told that her character would never die.

"I've been told two different things," said the actress. "The producers and executives told me they didn't know at the start of the season." However, she thought that John Lithgow who plays Trinity knew from the beginning. After all, Lithgow said during the San Diego Comic Con that only he knew the ending and jokingly said that he would have to kill if someone knows.

However, Benz had begun to suspect something major was going on when David Zayas aka Angel Batista said that Rita is not meant for Dexter's world. When she approached the producers, Benz was told, "We would never kill Rita."

The news came at the end of September when Benz was called for a meeting with the producers and scripts for the finale were distributed among the cast. "It was my day off, and I was called in for a meeting with the producers. At that point, you pretty much know. It was a tough meeting. In a bizarre way, it felt like a scene from 'Defending Your Life'," Benz said.

Oh Man, This was the saddest event to happen on the show till date!
When Dexter killed his brother, I felt a pinch of sadness, but killing Rita and the way it was done, broke my heart and I felt so bad for Dexter!
Groan!
To be honest, I really dislike his sister, whats her name. If they had killed her I would have been more than happy, but with Rita, Dexter felt something and what about the kids, how will Dexter manage now....Its sad, way too sad for me!

I honestly don't see her being dead for good. I literally just watched the finale last night and could NOT sleep. Call me a Dexter-aholic or what you may, but I couldn't sleep thinking about how in the world they could do this to Rita. She is not one of my favorite characters, I feel no emotional ties to her in the series, but seeing Dexter so upset and knowing he will always blame himself, and that his child was found just the way he was when he was little just made me cry. So, I started thinking about it a little more. If she had come back to grab something from the house... she wouldn't have brought her luggage back in just to get something. Her luggage was not there, and the cab driver still wasn't there. If she had went in the house to grab something and was taking too long and never came back out to get her luggage, then the cab driver would have gotten suspecious and either knocked on the door, or left her luggage at the door and left. Also... I think that if Arthur aka Trinity killed Rita, he would have told Dexter before he died. He would have said "I told you to leave me alone, was killing me really more important than your families safety", giving Dexter a hint or something. So, I really think that they left it in a hanger and in that dream like lighting in the end so they can still have room to play with the idea of bringing her back depending on how the fans took it. I am not taking it so well. I don't watch it one episode at a time on Showtime, I wait till the whole season comes out and then watch them all at once. So I wish I would have waited till Season 5 was out to even watch Season 4 so that I wouldn't have to wonder about it so much. LOL. TO THE DEXTER WRITERS AND PRODUCERS... BRING RITA BACK!
