As finales go, the last chapter in Castle's successful second season was certainly enjoyable, although those final few minutes were a bit frustrating for fans waiting for a Castle/Beckett romance (like me!) This episode had all the elements that make this show so much fun to watch: an interesting homicide, plenty of plot twists, more flirting than a high school dance and about a half dozen legitimate red herrings to cross off the suspect list. Oh yeah, and a stomach punch at the end that left us wanting more. As a whole, there were more suspenseful episodes this season, (the two-part "Tick, Tick, Tick...Boom!" episodes come to mind), but "A Deadly Game" was a lot of fun and the chemistry between the two leads, Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic, was once again a highlight of the show.
The plot of the episode owed a bit to the 1997 film, The Game, starring Michael Douglas, only it took a while for the detectives to figure out what was going on. As it turned out, the victim was enjoying a bit of role play, acting as a spy via an entertainment company that provided players with dossiers, clandestine meetings and fake assassination missions. Of course, getting killed wasn't part of the game, so it was up to Castle and Beckett to figure out whodunnit.
