Community: "Environmental Science" Episode 10 - Review

NBC kicked off Green Week 2009 with an enjoyable, if not perfect, episode that satisfied its environmental quota with a few nice jokes about recycling and conservation, while also acceptably tying together its three separate plot threads, a problem the show has has in the past. Oh yeah, there was also a nice song and dance number to boot.

Not since the second episode of the season, "Spanish 101" has Community allowed Ken Jeong to fully unleash his crazy upon the students at Greendale as Spanish teacher Senor Chang. His tirade and subsequent breakdown this week finally let him flex his comedy muscles while also giving Jeff Winger a target to exploit. When Senor Chang gave the class an enormous amount of homework, it was up to Jeff to figure out the reason why. He immediately deduced that Chang's wife had left him, and used that knowledge to his advantage. By becoming his all-night drinking buddy, Jeff conveniently got out of doing any of his assignments. And yet, his selflessness got the better of him at the end and he saved Chang's marriage, (earning himself some redemption and more homework as a result.)

As the class has slowly come to realize, Pierce is a second-tier Jeff. His joke, "If Senor Chang gets any crazier, he's going to win one of those Grammy Awards" got a much bigger laugh from the class when Jeff said it minutes later. He's also the go-to guy for problem solving even if he's not necessarily qualified to do so. Last week, Pierce claimed he could get Britta to stop smoking through hypnotherapy (which unintentionally worked) and before that, he jumped at the chance to help the Dean design a new school mascot, with horrifying results. This week, he helped Shirley with a school presentation by teaching her the art of public speaking. In reality, his advice would be terrible (like when he urged her to use buzzwords like "multiple orgasm" in her speech to energize the audience) and yet, things turned out okay (her phrase "orgasmically delicious" yielded positive results).
