District 9 has become one of summer's sleeper hits.

Though the film had no major stars and an unknown director (though it did have Peter Jackson as a producer), District 9 managed to gross $37 million dollars in its opening weekend and take the box office crown.
In its second week, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra grossed another $22.5 million, bringing its domestic gross to just under $100 million (which it should surpass today).
Slightly disappointing was a third place opening for The Time Traveler's Wife, debuting with $19.2 million.
Rounding out the top 5 were Julie & Julia ($12.4 million) and G-Force ($6.9 million).
New releases The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, Ponyo and Bandslam all opened small, grossing $5.4, $3.5 and $2.3 million dollars, respectively (though Ponyo was only playing on a limited number of screens).
