Characterization?

Is it me, or does anyone else think the characterization in this season has been off? I mean, dean is in HELL for who knows how long, and he comes back pretty much completely normal...the only side-effects we've seen from him are a few nightmares and him doing shots (in the last episode)...hardly an appropriate reaction showing the stress and trauma we would expect from living in HELL. Also Sam seems completely normal too, and maybe even a bit more innocent than last season....last season lead us to believe he was going darker i.e. the way he cut gordon's head off (necessay, yes, but brutal), agreeing to sacrifice the virgin, shooting that guy who stabbed him (you can't deny that that wasn't cold blooded murder). I would have thought the fact that dean was not only dead, but suffering in HELL, would have really messed sam up....i mean, we saw how he messed up he went after he realised he couldnt save deans life in in that episode where dean kept on dieing (sorry forgot its name)...but he seems fine, pretty much normal. Also their relationship should have developed to reflect the changes going on with their characters. But everything is more or less exactly as it was before dean died in season 3. Don't get me wrong, i love supernatural, i just think the writers have missed out on a lot of potential for character change and relationship development between the brothers. The writers have done an outstanding job the past 3 seasons though, maybe they have some amazing grand plan to surprise us with.

I kinda disagree...I feel that time will tell.I do think we need to see what Sammy was really like before Dean's return. But their relationship has changed greatly in that neither of them trust each other...and Sam's no longer trying to pretend to be someone he's not.And so far, for me...this season has been the best. I can see where you're coming from...I was expecting a Sam moment like "you can't imagine what it was like without you! I wanted to die!" etc. But maybe that will come later...hmmm.I couldn't write it any better than they do.They're just stretching it for 22 episodes.

I know what you mean, I wanna know more about Dean's time in Hell, what the heck Sammy did for those months Dean was dead but I am prepared to wait for it, I just hope when it does come about, it's everything we expect and hope for from Supernatural. I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one pissed off with Sam, I just don't know about him this season, I don't trust him, I think he's hiding something major from Dean about his powers. I still like Dean though, but I have disagree with him seeming normal, having watched Supernatural for the 4th year now, us avid fans know Dean does not like talking about anything, especially involving his emotions, he shuts off and ignores it (some may say it's a man thing, trying to act stronger, not willing to show weakness, doesn't like talking about how they feel, feel crying is a weakness that sort of thing but it's more common than people know). The drinking and not talking about the nightmares and getting angry when Sam tries to pry is classic Dean. I mean look at earlier episodes ... he gets mad when Sam talks about their mother and doesn't talk much about the fire and when their father dies, the unforgettable car smashing scene just proves he's one to clam up and appear to be fine when asked about it but when pushed, gets mad. It's a classic reaction, some people have when dealing with grief, loss, horrible experiences (like being in Hell) ... heck I'm even an example of this and I'm a girl! I mean, you may not see these subtle signs (like the drinking) in every episode but slipping in it just proves Dean may act normal but that's certainly not what's going on inside his head.

I think this weeks episode we find out what Sam was doing while Dean was in hell. Sam is normal now ya cause it's been months later, plus Dean's back from hell so why would he still be messed up? And as far as Dean seeming normal, I think it's just a front, like WeeJ17 said. But also, it's still early in the season people... there might be side effects from Dean's time in hell that we don't know about yet. And YES I FULLY AGREE that Sam is hiding something from Dean. That's for sure. Either he's hiding something now or there is something inside of him that hasn't surfaced yet, but once it does he's gonna be hiding it then. That's my take on it anyways. At least there's 22 eps this season for it all to come together. And here's prayin that it's not the last season :)

I completly agree with everything Weej17 said. I am also an avid fan and have been watching supernatural for a very long time and what she said is completly ture... Plus I'm the same way... I do not talk about my problems at all it's uncomfortable and I get agree when people try to make me talk about it...
