Horrible and Preachy!

It's like watching an after-school special or a cautionary tale from a bad sex ed class. Instead of presenting a wide variety of viewpoints and options, the emphasis is on only one point of view. It uses stereotypes of the band geek, the goth girl, the latina slut (that's racist too!). This isn't how most teenagers act, and the portrayal of the parents isn't very good either.

It's been PROVEN that abstinence only education doesn't work, and that students who take it actually end up having HIGHER rates of diseases and pregnancy. If you feel that abstinence is the right choice for you, then good! But if you feel you're read, then you should have all the information and support you need. This show makes it seem like the people who have sex are all sluts or have mental issues, and like the people who choose abstinence are all devout religious people with controlling parents. That might be true sometimes, but definitely not all the time. People should make a mature decision about what's right for them.

The website is a good resource for straight facts about sex and sexuality, and people should get all the information they need, and anyone who has questions so visit it.

Yes, this is true...But also I think the idea of the programme is to show these things to people. Maybe they are exaggerated, but people watching at home might be able to relate to them and therefore watch the show, and maybe even take advice from it.

its exaggerated so that its entertaining...and so each character is different. it is supposed to address the everyday lives of teenagers...but im sure the everyday lives arent as interesting and entertaining to make a tv show without adding more than one element. Also...they're having to represent many different types of people, faiths, beliefs, situations and backgrounds within six characters...so having to merge a couple together is feasible surely?
whats more...how is a latino slut racist? for one thing...i don't think she's the 'slut' per se...yes she is shown to be a flirt and very alluring but thats to show viewers that yes...at 14/15 years old there are kids who act much older for their age and do have sex. I think its very judgemental to categorise her as a slut.after all....check the definition.
Also..how is it racist? it may be that they tried to incorporate a multi-cultural cast...and it just so happens the actress suitable was latino. is that saying the nerdy couple being chinese/asian is also racist? or that the white troubled 'player' is also racist? or even the white girl who got pregnant is even more racist?
and many tv shows use stereotypes...because thats what everyone can relate to. y'know...skinny, blonde, pretty cheerleaders...geeks who don't get dates...handsome jock who gets all the girls.
this show is about high school...there's bound to be the regular stereotypes. the mass of teenmovies that are out are all based HEAVILY on the stereotypes.
give the show a chance...i think its making a pretty good effort...albeit not being the best show out there.

I think they are setting it up to "break" some certain stereotypes, after all, the goth girl is secretly really nice, the "good girl" Christian sneaks around behind her parents back, and the "slut" is hiding something. Lets wait a few episodes and see what unfolds.
