AWESOMESAUCE

After three episodes, I feel that I like this show a lot; And, I have read all of the books of the series so far. I do tend to enjoy shows more than try to find fault with them. However, I am very grateful for the new way the story is being told. Though, I do hope that they delve more into witchcraft, and Bonnie, than the books. I also prefer Elena in the mansion from a rich family.

I like how Elena seems to actually be the reincarnation of Katherine. I always imagined that as I read the books despite the overtones to the contrary in the books. Of course, this might make the first arch villain very interesting. Though I hope they skip Elena's second death because of this fundamental chain. I also like how Vicky is Matt's brother and the changes that may bring.

Bonnie held a big role in the story the books tell but it is kinda cliche and short. What I crave is a rich sub-story where Bonnie embraces her heritage as a witch. I also hope for a male witch to enter the picture... or maybe Damon picked up witchcraft in his travels.

Yes, I hope they go farther with changing how the story is told. For instance, I wish the vampires to be more 'alive' in a Buddhist way. While obviously non-human I think the option of their bodies still "functioning" in normal animal ways. That is one thing I liked about Twilight in that the story adds a genetic idea though it is very limited. I think just adding an entire helix into a Triple Helix might be fun.

Elena having a deeper tie to Fel's Church through blood, is another element I would like. Thus, her having the big mansion still as she has in the story would have been better. Which, seems to be tied into why Damon and Stephan are a full four centuries younger than they were in the book. I really wish they kept their older ages because it left so much for the imagination.

Unlike Twilight, the live-action version seems to be going on an entirely different path but the same direction as the books. So I abundantly, and absolutely, recommend watching this television show to everyone. Naturally, I hope the writers, producers, etc are listening and agree with me.

i haven't read the books but I agree. The more complex, messy and mysterious the characters get the better! :)

I haven't read the book either, but I know for sure that I love this series! It's so intense and romantic, also very mysterious and sometimes even a bit frightening. It shows reality and how it would actually be like if vampires did exist. I think this is much better then Twilight, where everything is a fantasy and playing baseball? Really? Doesn't anyone notice that they just randomly play family baseball. Little League much?
Anyway, instead of me ranting on about how Twilight is ridiculous. I really think this show opens up a new view of the whole Edward Cullen and Bella story. It's more subtle with the love and really drags the watchers in. Love this show and I hope it never ends!

I have to say I was very surprised when I saw the pilot, and now the second and third episode, and found myself actually liking the series.
I HAVE read the books and honestly didn't enjoy them one bit; I couldn't make it past the middle of the second book. I mean to not offend, but the book was so incredibly cliche and annoying. Elena was superficial and unlikable, and the brothers were generic and dull. Even though the plot line was interesting and had potential it didn't work well with the characters.
Now, the show is absolutely fantastic. Never have I enjoyed a movie or a show more than the original book. The producers, directors, etc. really hit the mark and made very neccesary changes which would have been needed to make the show as enjoyable as it is. So I am gald to say I found something new to watch on Thursday nights.

I just read some of the books, found a friend has a few, :P and yeah it was more disapointing than I thought. I don't want to give to much away but I skipped a few books and read the fourth I think it was. Everything (the characters) were the same, same love triangle, same rivalries, plus a few more vampires. But apart from that very similar.
I really hope they pull of this series well and so far so good. :)

I really don't think you should compare The Vampire Diaries with Twilight. They aren't very much alike, and personally I like the Vamp Diaries more.
This comment also reminds me of the Twilight reference in the fourth episode. :)
Caroline: Why don't you sparkle?Damon: Because I live in the real world where vampires burn in the sun.
