Wow, why not try a spoiler warning before going and blabbing stuff in titles where unsuspecting people can see it? Sheesh.

Fixed for spoiler.
I don't know. I love Lost with a passion, but I asked that same question. The sacrifice was unnecessary, as you are correct, he could have closed the door from the other side and escaped with Desmond. It was poorly written, IMO, which is very unusual for Lost.

Unnecessary yes. But Charlie knew he was destined to die. I think he just gave up after he had contacted the ship and done what he needed to for the rest of the survivors.

chalie believed he HAD to die, in order for claire and aaron to be saved, as it was put to him by desmond in his 'flashes' The same reason he clubbed Desmond with the canoe paddle and went down by himself. also, dominic monaghan wanted to leave the show, he was dissatisfied with charlie's role in the season's story arc, as a B-teamer, and pretty much asked to be let go. also the writers said they pretty much wrote themselves into a corner, despite charlies huge popularity, having the desmond-foresees-charlie-dying thing goin on and on and on, they felt tht viewers wouldve felt like all that time watching was wasted if charlie simply walked away scot free.

i have to agree with all of you. the way he died was really stupid considering that he could have easily escaped. if he had to die the writers should have scripted it in an inescapable and inevitable way. but as with most things on lost just because you die doesnt mean youre really 'dead'. it would be really easy to reintroduce charlie if dominic and the writers decide to work together again i.e in terms of flashbacks and apparitions etc. fingers crossed for season 5...i hope it doesnt frustrate me as much as the other seasons have in terms of all the unanswered questions and all.
