Ballard's Relationship with Women

Ballard has been a bit of a puzzle for me, there is his obsession with Echo, at some point I believed that he was in love with Caroline, but I think this steadfast view has been confused. He's not really sure what she is and what to do with her. He seems less attracted (butt not less interested in) to her now that she's demonstrated such a strong sense of free will despite the trappings put on her as a doll. She seems to have become less of a project but a tool. This seemed increasingly evident when Ballard bought Mellie's freedom instead of Caroline's.

Ballard was into Mellie, she was submissive, but not helpless like Echo and the lost Caroline. She wasn't too delicate for him to be sexually involved with her, something I could never see happening with Echo/Caroline.

I'm wondering if we're ever going to delve further into Ballard's past and his issues. There is a broken quality about him, something I'd like to explore but isn't necessarily a priority within the series.

Anyone have thought's on Ballard's relationship with the women in his life? I don't really have any thoughts on him and Adele, or perhaps Dr. Saunders. Anyone care to weigh in?

Totally!! I'm really confused about Paul and Mellie and Echo. I mean, it's pretty obvious that Paul is/was into Mellie but he seems to have this.. fascination with Echo that is not REALLY attraction but something else.. Personally, I find Paul simultaneously repulsive and EXTREMELY HOT. I know, I am so weird haha.

I kind of see that Paul relates to Echo sort of like a big brother, like he wants to protect her and sexuality is just not part of it at all.

princesspoppet - I agree, Tahmoh Penikett is just, crazy sexy, but they way he deals with women is a turn off.
kalmia - Earlier in the series I would have agreed with you. Although as he uses her more as a tool to bring down the Dollhouse and his other FBI target in gun trafficking criminal Jamie Bamber I'm inclined to wonder what is going on there.
A big brother would be fighting to release Echo as he did with Mellie, not putting her into more dangerous situations for his own benefit.

For me it seems like Echo/Caroline has always been something to him, but he just doesn't know what that is, Mellie was a distraction that he definitely fell in love with, but she was designed for that, programed for him to love, I can see that being a little earth shattering for Paul, and the reason he didn't get echo released instead of mellie, was because of the whole transformation, I think Echo has a plan and brought ballard in on it, (the only reason he would stay) and hes there to remind her of the plan, and of who she is.Caroline, like Echo would want to take down the dollhouse.
Ballard is just super confused all the time, and probably a little scarred for falling for his decoy
