Lost Review 5.09 - 'Namaste' Part 2

I was a little disappointed we didn't get to see Hurley's induction as I think it would of added some great humour to the episode. Loved it when he was nervous because he didn't know who the president was in 1977 and thought he would be caught out by this! It seemed the inductions went well though Phil the Dharma guy I think will be a big problem for them as he seems suspicious of Jack too when he guides him in the direction of LaFleur's residence.

The episode is coming to a close as a final showdown approaches. Now in the confinement of his home, LaFleur and Jack can talk. We had a little bit of a Jack and Juliet reunion as he enters the home of LaFleur and he hasn't caught on yet that they are together (as they should be in my opinion). I felt in this scene though Jack wasn't talking to LaFleur, he was Sawyer again. They have a little bit of a verbal throwdown and in the same way Juliet was able to show Kate her stature of power in 1977, Sawyer was able to do the same with Jack. He basically rubbishes anything Jack tried to do before on the island and says how his great plan of getting people off the island has lead him right back to where he started. The way Sawyer is saying all of this and his aggression towards Jack just reminded me so much of his old ways and not the capable and good leader LaFleur is. As Jack leaves, we see Sawyer catch a glimpse of Kate (probably waiting around to ruin someone's life as she always does!) and his expression has all the symptoms of feelings of love coming flooding back............ R.I.P LaFleur?

I didn't mention too much about 2007 so far as the only important thing that happened that we didn't know about was at the end. We already knew Frank (love that guy!) and Sun had gone off to the main island and that Ben became unconscious somehow. Well, we found out that Sun launches a cracking blow to his head with a rowing oar to make him unconscious which was good in my books. The point really is that when Frank and Sun arrive at the processing port they see the smoke monster rattling through the trees and lo and behold we have Christian Shepherd open the door and invite them in to discover where Jin is. Yep, final time of no waiting for the answer, Christian lifts a dusty photo from the wall and shows Jin is back in 1977.

The closing scene was sort of spoiled for me as I had accidentally read about a month back that this young boy had returned to the cast list. Earlier, LaFleur had managed to get Sayid back to the barracks under the truce-law of Sayid identifying himself as a Hostile. In his cell, he is brought a sandwich (with no mustard) by a young Benjamin Linus.....ooooooh!

Well, I shall leave you there, but not before I assign some homework questions:-

- How will Sayid get sprung from the clink?

- What happened to Farraday? (Sawyer left a teaser during the episode that he was no longer there)

- Is LaFleur gone now with Kate's return?

- Will Christian lead Sun back to Jin? And does he have his own agenda for doing so?

- Are we left with little doubt that Christian travels through the smoke monster or is the smoke monster himself?

- Will Hurley find out who is the president in 1977?

See y'all on the island next week.......

Great review - really enjoyed it.
I just love the spookiness we get when Christian Shepherd/Jacob/Whispers/Smokey are around. Its brilliant. The are very much combining old-town americana horror movie references within the storyline of Lost - even down to the squeaky sign blowing in the wind!
But I digress - I'm very intrigued by the subject of Daniel and where he has gone. I theorized on another page that he was so cut-up over Charlotte's death that I think he has travelled off to find her. I won't say any more on my theories of how he does this, but its got to involve time travelling hasn't it?
And yes - you have gotta love Frank - he's the dude! Really intrigued as to what happens with Sun and Frank now - and if their 'journey' - alluded to by Christian -becomes a time travelling adventure where they have to get back to 1977.
I'm also interested to see how they deal with the Sayid storyline and whether or not it sinks in as to him meeting young Ben - and the ramifications it could create if he realizes all the trouble he could solve by killing Ben before he has time to become the horrible creepy man that he does later in life. Perhaps this is what Ben wants? If Sayid kills Ben when he is younger... could Ben then become Jacob in the half-alive half-dead world? Hmmm...
And Hurley - it was Jimmy Carter! Look forward to the next episode!

I feel as if Sawyer was really trying to hold onto his LaFluer persona until that moment of Kate and Sawyer seeing each other on separate porches. They very clearly called each other 'Kate' and 'James' when first seeing each other as opposed to the Freckles I was expecting, but I think we were set up for that disappointment with Sawyer using Hurley's nickname. I thought it was odd neither Sawyer nor Juliet said something to Jack about them being together. None of them said anything to catch up on what had been going on beyond that those left on the island were faking Dharma life.
I couldn't decide if it was a sign of unity or falling apart as a group that they didn't feel the need to catch up, but considering next week's preview of 'every man for himself,' it looks like the survivors aren't going to stick together as well as hoped! I'm very excited to see how all this develops!

P.S. Was anyone else hoping to see Claire appear behind Christian?? I'm dying to get just a little bit about her, though I know she's not set to be in much, if at all, of this season.

yeah, I think Jack coming into his house and trying to take the lead brought back Sawyer slowly but then seeing ol' Freckles on the porch brought it all back to him. I really like Juliet and would rather Jack and Kate kept their dysfunctional selves to themselves! Everyone did seem a little stand-offish with each other but I feel that it has been three years and things have changed. As LaFleur said to Horace last episode 'three years is enough'.
Claire is still a mystery for everyone kendra...I have no idea what direction they are taking her!

Great review as usual!!! I was on the edge of my seat last night...i am soo excited to see hwo this all unfolds! we all know that Sayid hates [perhaps more than anyone else] Ben and who shoul be the DHARMA person to offer him a little love and attention but the young version of a monster. I wonder if this is before or after he has made contact witht he 'hostiles' which is why he asked if Sayid was one of them. WHo knows. The real question is...what will Sayid do? Is what he is "meant" to do kill child Ben and protect the world from his evil, so that he never kicks out Charles Widmore and this power struggle never ensues? But can Sayid kill a kid, even if he knows what he will become? We can only wait and see!!!
I'm being to doubt that Christian is the smoke monster, although I believe that sometimes when we see him it is the smoke monster disguised as him. Remember in the very first season when Jack finds his coffin it is empty, maybe the island brought him back to life like he did John. And why is John stuck in 2007 and not with the others who he brought back if he was 'the choosen one' and why didn't Sun get sucked into the time warp??? It is all sooo confusing but soooo great at the same time!!!
Also how will Sun get back to Jin or Jin back to Sun. The DHARMA barracks looked pretty destroyed in 2007, a short 3 yrs after the Oceanic 6 departed. What happened there? And where are the other survivors that got left behind, I am sure the 1930s Others didn't get them all in their beach raid. What happened???
I read somewhere that Walt would be back this seaon but I would hate to think it was for that one episode arc. Walt who had such a great power and such a connection to the island should be a huge focus this season when the island's secrets are revealed!!! And what about the statue? Is the explaination that they promised only a glimpse of it in its entirety? I want to know more about the ancient civilization and why the DHARMA came there and HOW they even found out about it!!!! Thank goodness for the promise of a reveal per week or I would be out of my mind with excitement!!!
One last thing. I am sooo tired of them calling him James, he is SAWYER!!! I'm not too fond of this James character, give me back the name calling ball busting Sawyer that we all know and love!! PLEASE!!!!

Any idea into why Sun didn't get sent back?
I had one theory but I'm not sure its much use ha ha...Maybe the Island doesn't need her? After all it was going to kill her when she gave birth to the baby?

Just wanted to post a crazy thought. If we go by Lost's time traveling rules and everything that has happened in the past has happened. For example: Charlotte tells Daniel that when she was a little girl he came to her. The event of them traveling back to 1977 had not happened yet, but she remembers it. So at the end of Namaste when Sayid meets Ben, does this mean Ben has known Sayid and perhaps all of the survivors for the entire series and has just been playing dumb? I wouldn't put it past the creepy master manipulator.

gaycard- not too sure myself why Sun was omitted from the time-warp to the 70's....or even wht Locke wasn't either as it seems the island needs him in some way. Not even sure there is anything positive about being on the island in 2007 as all the action is happening in the past.
spiderdan5 - You're exactly right. It will be very intersting to see how this plays out as Ben has known Sayid (and probably the rest) since 1977. Maybe that is why he used to get all Nostradamus and say how he knew Juliet needed to stay and that he even took interest in the 815 survivors.
