THE MIDDLE “Thanksgiving II” Review

The Middle Season 2 Episode 9 - Thanksgiving II

"I want family in this house, Mike. Otherwise it’s not Thanksgiving–it’s just overeating." I love this line because it is so darn true. The interaction between Frankie and Mike is terrific. From Mike’s "That sounds awful. Not happening" when Frankie gushes about the joys of emotional floodgates to the expressions that flash across his face when he says, "I don’t want to be a bother," they complement each other perfectly and hilariously. Equally good is Frankie’s "Stay with me, Mike," but my favorite moment comes after Mike says, "At least my family is here." He says "uh-oh" almost immediately afterward and you can see horror cross his face. Such a low blow and he knows it. It’s a very real moment.

I loved John Cullum when he guest starred as Big Mike last season, and Norm MacDonald could not be a better choice to play Rusty. He has some of the same mannerisms and he is pitch perfect when he says, "I don’t want to be a bother." His scene with Frankie is sweet and I like how the Big Mike-Rusty storyline is resolved. It’s a happy ending that rings true for them. Unfortunately, some of the couch (non) action feels a bit too drawn-out.
