‘True Grit’: Review Revue

Even though John Wayne won an Oscar in the role of Rooster Cogburn, the original 1969 version of "True Grit" isn’t the kind of film that would cast a long cinematic shadow over a remake. And with a combination of the Coen Brothers directing, Jeff Bridges starring and a Charles Portis novel as source material, there’s potential for cinematic fun, if not low-level brilliance. Add in Matt Damon as a do-good Texas Ranger and spunky newcomer Hailee Steinfeld in the role of Mattie Ross, the teenage girl out for revenge against them an who killed her father, and "True Grit" looks like one of the best films of the year. Critics mostly agree.
