It was "Heros" originally by David Bowie, and it sounded like either an obscure live performance or a cover version. According to the Wikipedia page, it's been one of the most covered song in Western History; so it's anyone's guess as to what version it is. I'd recommend contacting HBO, if you're that in love with that specific version.

JanT2 is right, the song is Heroes... but the version they played is sung Peter Gabriel - Heroes off his album Scratch My Back (1st Song)
