The Maryann Mystery

So after watching the season premier I feel like I may have a solution to the Maryann/Miss Janette mystery. **Possible spoilers for anyone who hasn't watched the season premier**

Sam confirmed what I already suspected...werewolves exist in the True Blood world. He also seemed scared to death of them. Saying they were "dangerous, nasty creatures".

Now, for some interesting werewolves facts. Eating human hearts, for a variety of reasons, is a common thread in werewolf lore. In some cases, eating the heart was supposed to "cure" a werewolf of their condition. In others eating the heart was simply the common diet...and in still others, the act kept the werewolf young and strong. Now, the fact that it appears that Maryann has stayed young (or at least the same age) for....well I don't really know how long...but for sometime strikes me as suspicious. Top it of with the heartless body of Janette found in Andy's car...now I know it's too soon to say for sure, but the sign's say right now that Maryann looks a little wolfy.

To wrap it up I have no idea how that wacky statue works into all this. However, the fact that this statue appears split between a woman and a gray something or other...werewolf still sounds pretty good to me.

I loved to hear your guy's thoughts on the subject....:)

I don't think so... There has been no allusion what so ever to wolves so far, and there hasn't been any evidence that Mary Ann is a shape shifter of any sort. She seems to be a creature that feeds off of sexual energy. I think the reference to the god Pan in the last episode was a clue - maybe she's some type of maenad/bacchae.
I don't know if she had anything to do with Miss Janette's death (somehow that seems to easy), but it is worth noting that maenads are said to tear small animals (and infants) to pieces when they enter their ritualistic frenzies.

I think you are both correct. If there is such an "animal" (sorry) as "god/goddess of warewolves", then she might be it. Sort of the "Eric" or higher of Warewolves. I think eggs is exactly what his name implies. He is a "sperm" donor of the evilist kind. Tara is a perfect "host" for breeding for whatever reason.

ooooooo...that is an excellent observation sportn_man! A donor huh....great thought. Either way, Maryann is much more than she appears. That vibrating thing she does during sex and mediating sort of reminded me of some sort of change happening in here.
I had never heard of the maenad/bacchae before benshmuel. I will have to read up on them...
Thanks for your thoughts! I look forward to reading more!

Very interesting, though i don't think Maryann has anything to do with werewolves. Remember the pig/big beast we saw her with when Tara had a accident?? I have read the books but I don't remember what she is, but i know that she is something wild and being part of an organization like the vampire politics looks out of character. Even if the show isn't following the books so much, i am just looking forward more to it every week!! (and the campain!! have you seen the posters?? i love'em!)

I agree with Benshmuel. I don't think that she is a werewolf. I think she is a maenad. I can't say for sure that she tore out Janette's heart, but if she did, it probably was for some kind of ritual or something. I do think that she is that creature with those big horns that is going to attack Sookie, that they've been showing in the season 2 trailers. I am so very anxious to see what they really reveal about her true identity. Sam is definitely scared of her, and he knows that she is something inhuman and possesses some kind of powers, and is evil.I also like what you said sportn_man about MaryAnn using Eric as a sperm donor and Tara as a breeder of something very nasty and evil. Eric knows the game, and is going along with it, with Tara being none the wiser. I hope Tara doesn't die.

Great comments! I haven't read any of the books and only got into this show because I needed something to watch while everything else was on hiatus. I didn't think I would like the show to much...but I love it! I watched all the eps in a 3 day span :) Anyways, I love the thoughts you all are sharing. I definitely to learn more about the maenad. I can't wait to see if sportn_man's theory is true about Eggs....
Well, I've pretty much abandoned the werewolf theory, but we'll see where this all goes. I'm still sure she's not entirely human and that Sam is scared our of his wits around her. I haven't seen the trailers with the "horned thing" but it wouldn't surprise me if Maryann were to be the next big bad (pardon my buffyism) :)

I don't think she's a werewolf maybe some kind of siren/succubus type or possibly something new altogether. Also, it seems like there is something up with that black guy Tara's getting along with can't remember his name but he seems like he's in on something.

Were Maryann's thought's in Greek or in Latin in Episode 2? Does anyone know what she was saying?
I agree with Demetrice that Maryane is probably the horned creature, which also makes it more probable that she is behind Miss Janette's death. But maybe we're in for an even bigger surprise after all.
Also, sportn's theory about Eggs is interesting... and very disturbing. But if so - why Tara? And is there a connection between Maryann choosing Tara and (possibly) killing Janette? And - can Eggs be the pig??? What do you think?
Kylieann, I think your theory that Maryann is a succubus is definitely the best theory yet! Though I still think she will also be identified as a maenad, or something that ties her into Greek mythology as well.

I have another theory... which kind of incorporates a couple I heard already... I think maryann collects shapeshifters... and shes going to use tara to breed more... Someone mentioned that eggs could be the pig that tara saw when she was drunk... and maryann the woman...we already know she has taken an interest in sam... but the poor guy was too scared to stick around...

I listened to Maryann's thoughts again, and I'm afraid I can't make it out but I'm nearly certain it's in Greek.
The more I read, the more convinced I become that Maryann is some sort of succubus/lamia/lilitu. If that is true, we have to consider the option that Eggs is an incubus.

Wow, you guys are awesome with your summations on what could really be going on with Maryann. I think we pretty much have this thing down pact (LOL). Hey, we could write the script. But really True Blood is so geat, and its getting even better.
Have any of you commented on the Lafayette senario? If not, I'll see you over there. I would love to hear all of your takes on his future. He will be apart of Season 2, but in what capacity exactly do you think? Click on the what happens to Lafayette link.

The thing with the thoughts is amazing! I've tried to fine an online audio translator so we can know for sure what language is her original, but the online ones only translate text. Either way this has been the best TB thread I've seen yet.
Do any of you have any theories on what was going on with that chic's eyes in the bar. They were completely black! It reminded me of some form of possession...either demon or spirit, but I'm not sure how that works into all these theories yet. Ok, I'm going to go check out the Lafeyette thread now :) I can't wait to see what other theories we come up with.

I have watched this show since the first season and i love it i hated waiting for almost a year for season 2! Maryann creaps me out but i think your right on with the succubus theory. She is going to go after Sookie now that she has asked Tara to move in with her. Maryann is pissed i can't wait for next weeks episode

I think it's possible that she's a witch. The fact that Tera & Eggs were welcomed into her home where there is all this food, kind of reminds me of Hansel & Gretel. The chanting in her head also makes me think of witches. Not to mention the pig. In Harry Potter all the witches & wizards have an animal. Plus Maryann has a mole. I know moles don't mean much ;but if I were casting for the part of a witch , she would be my first choice.

The closest thing I could find to the statue that was shown is the Ancient Egyptian Mother Goddess called Nuit or Nathor (Predynastic Period, Naqada II Period, about 3650 B.C. - 3300 B.C) it looks a LOT like the statue that young Sam picked up in her home. Wondering if she IS the goddess of possibly or a high priestess kept alive through magic and sacrifice. It would explain the near orgy at Sam's bar. And the heart was considered the resting place of the soul in Egyptian mythology. Just a thought....

Wow...scary resemblance there lonmand29! I did a bit more research on Nathor and discovered that not only is the Mother (Earth) goddess, but she is also considered to be one of the goddesses of fertility...not that we couldn't figure that out from the Merlotte's scene. I'm still confused as to how she can make Sam change shapes,. but I'm sure that will be made more clear in the coming episodes.

about the statue..I pretty sure i saw that statue in our history books in highschool. As I can remember it's Mycenean (Greek), a female shape with arms opened wide and high, and it symbolises a) the woman and the fertility, b) or the godess of the snakes, about that I'm not so sure, because the goddess of the snakes is holding snakes in her arms, c) or the goddess Hecate, she was the goddess of the magic arts in the underworld and a shapeshifter also, as she appears in some statues with 3 shapes.
about the weird language thought, it's ancient Greek, as I can listen she says "hekas hekas este !@#!@!@#$" the "hekas" word is used to say "go away or far" to someone.
sorry for my english i'm greek.

thanks for clearing up some of that mystery Stathis! I really appreciate it and I'm sure the rest of the viewers puzzling over those words do too :)
After last night's episode the possibility of MaryAnn being some sort of reincarnated goddess seems even more likely. I know we didn't get a good look at that creature that attacked Sookie, but it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be MaryAnn. I'm sooooo mad that we have to wait 2 weeks before a new episode. I truly believe that this show is the next "Buffy". It's got great mystery, awesome writing, devoted fans, even better acting than Buffy and it keeps pushing the envelope. I don't know if you all remember how upset people were over some of the Buffy/Spike sex scenes a while back...people kept calling them "too explicit". Now, True Blood is pushing that envelope even more. Hopefully, they continue to do it tastefully.

I'm going with the Maenad theory. She's always dressed in a vaguely Greek fashion, there was the Pan reference, the orgiastic parties, the drinking she encouraged in Andy, and she slipped in a reference in the last episode (Scratches) about Ibitha (aka the Island of Ibiza in the Mediterranean that's all full of Roman and Carthaginian ruins). I'm still working on the hog. It made me think of Circe but then I lost the Maenad bit...um....I'll get back to you on that. And the creature in the forest that attacked Sookie. I'm wondering if that's Maryann's "true form" or something or if it's some kind of creature she controls, but I definitely think they're connected. Working on their connection to Daphne.

The succubus hypothesis seems to be correct. On the cast listing for Episode 4, Dale Wade Davis is cast as "Succubus Victim".

Don't know if this is relevant, but I did just remember that Circe's sister was the mother of the minotaur. Which is what that creature that attacked Sookie looked like. Interesting....Now I'm just confused.
