Cameron Diaz- the woman who played the doe-eyed sultress in The Mask, danced around in her undies for the Charlie's Angels films, was named Mary, that there was something about - dwarfed these iconic roles by her teaching style as Miss Elizabeth Halsey in Bad Teacher. Elizabeth Halsey starts off as a vulgar, pot-smoking, inconsiderate, gold-digger. And over the course of 92 minutes she grows up and learns not to be as shallow… so prepare yourself for a chick-flick, but bring along your boyfriend if not just to see Cameron Diaz in tight clothing and prostitute make-up, but for the boobies.
Playing the love interest is the multi-talented Justin Timberlake. Justin, the beautiful man that he is, was extremely annoying in this film. There isn't really a better way to explain that, but know that his character, the substitute teacher Scott Delacorte, is purposefully unlikable and irritating. And awkward… oh, so awkward. I was actually pleased to see him as a wimpy man; somewhat vulnerable like the scene in The Social Network with the inhaler.
Other roles of note - and familiar faces - were 1) Phyllis Smith from The Office, gracefully playing the push-over best friend, Lynn Davies. 2) How I Met Your Mother star Jason Segel - with a simpler and less goofy version of his roles in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man - played the casual pot-smoker P.E. teacher Russell Gettis. 3) Lucy Punch - a gorgeous face that you may recognize as "that crazy lady from …" [Fill in the blank: You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Dinner For Schmuks, The Class, Being Julia, etc] I'm telling you, this British Goddess has a gift for playing crazies!
Keep an eye out for two hysterically brilliant actors - John Michael Higgins and Thomas Lennon - who also have roles in this film. As usual, prepare to laugh when you see them on screen.
Overall, there were lots of laughs (and boobies). I wouldn't say it had surprises, but as SideReel Kendra put it, "there was more plot than I expected" … and then the final moments where you pause and say, "Oh, right… It's a romantic comedy."
'Bad Teacher' is now playing.
