‘America’s Got Talent,’ Week 5, Night 1: TV Recap

On the last day of the show’s New York leg, “America’s Got Talent” actually found precious little of it.  In a rare diversion from its time-honored triumph-disappointment-triumph formula, both the first and last acts were pretty awful, and the producers were forced to end the episode on a note of odd uplift that only underscored the fact that some many of those who audition are spectacularly, if sometimes entertainingly delusional about their prospects of becoming a star.

The first couple to audition, physicians Rak and Tak, were married for 26 years, and judge Piers Morgan was right when he observed that they were ideally-suited for one another: neither of them has any idea that they’re terrible, terrible singers. Performing Heart’s “Alone,” the duo massacred the classic rock ballad without interruption before the judges sent them packing. Sharon diplomatically suggested that she dismissed them because she didn’t want the medical world to go without their abilities, but there was no doubt that if they went on to one more level, it would be the show’s audience that would suffer.
