LAW AND ORDER: SVU “True Believers” Review

LAW AND ORDER: SVU "True Believers" Season 13 Episode 6 – Six weeks into the season, Law and Order: SVU finally gave us an episode that proved why it’s still on the air after thirteen years. "True Believers" wasn’t easy to watch, from the initial, eerily quiet rape scene to the painful verdict reading that made me want to scream, but it was also necessary and true, something rarely seen on TV.

A young college student is raped in her own apartment in broad daylight and (lucky us?) we get to see the whole thing. We know who her rapist is, just as she does, and so it’s no surprise that he’s caught fairly easily. What’s difficult is what comes next.

Because the trial that follows is as excruciating as the victim rights counselor warned the victim in the hospital that it would be. The defendant, a young black man, gets a civil rights activist for a lawyer, who proceeds to pull out every trick in the book to put the victim and the NYPD on trial instead of his client.
