CSI "Freaks and Geeks" Season 12 Episode 6 – After last week’s CSI in Peril ep, it was nice to return to classic form in "Freaks and Geeks." CSI has never shied away from exploring subcultures, sometimes sensitively, sometimes not, but never without Nick’s patented "I can’t believe these people exist" look.
We open with a woman being tortured by having long needles shoved under her skin. This is, of course, our victim, and as it turns out, the needles are not about torture, but performance art. As one of the geeks (a trained performer, rather than a natural-born freak) in a traveling sideshow, she played the human candelabra, the mistress of pain. She was also sleeping with the elephant man which, while proving that love really is blind, also gave her uptight sister enough of a reason to kill her with the same drug that killed Michael Jackson. I was wondering when someone would put that in their crime drama.
The whole episode, at least the parts outside of the lab, felt like a music video for a gothic clown band, and I mean that in a good way. I felt the designer really captured the spirit of the freak show, how it can be glamorous and creepy at the same time, yet it’s undeniably a home with a family of performers who take care of each other. For the most part; the ringleader still dumped the woman’s dead body rather than deal with a police investigation.
