TV Line is reporting that Ellen Barkin (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) has landed a role on Modern Family. Barkin is set to play Vera, a real estate heavyweight that will give Phil Dunphy all he can handle. The character will be introduced in an episode early next year; Modern Family, whose fall finale is tonight, will return on January 4th.
Barkin hasn't done a lot of TV in her career, appearing in a pilot this year (NBC's A Mann's World), a 2001 episode of King of the Hill, and a handful of TV movies. You can currently watch the award-winning actress in the black-comedy Another Happy Day (pictured above), where she plays a woman coming home for a family wedding.
The third season of Modern Family, which has seen the show's highest ratings yet, has thus far featured several notable guest stars, including Leslie Mann (Knocked Up), Kevin Hart (Soul Plane), and Jennifer Tilly (Bullets Over Broadway), among others. Joining Barkin in appearing on the show in 2012 is Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine), who'll be playing an ally of Phil's.
Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9:00 on ABC.
How have you been enjoying Modern Family this season? Do you think that a rivalry can further bring out the real estate shark in Phil? Are you excited to see Barkin tackle a good TV role?
