Acting and Southern accent needs work

For a citizen of Louisiana i find Sookie's accent over exaggerated. And for her african american friend Tara...she sounds like a suburban white girl trying to act ghetto. I think the writers had something but they should have casted different people. The whole cast seems to have trouble with their southern accents but that could just be me.

Oh, comon, I guessed that its probably not 100% authentic, but Anna Paquin is a Canadian who grew up in New Zealand, so I think she's doing real well already. Besides, her acting skills is more than up to the job! And its just not realistic to cast only Southerners...I think its admirable that they put in so much effort to recreate the accent...I've seen shows/movies set in foreign countries where they don't even bother to emulate the accent...its really difficult to keep up an accent...

I agree with the last comment. Come on. First and foremost they all have dialect coaches who are helping them to pronounce all of our vowels and consonants correctly. On top of the fact that most of them aren't from the south I think they are doing a great job. Just look at their performances. As for the vampires most of them are supposed to have been around for centuries so for them to have the same accent that we do is unrealistic. Also, you must not get around Louisiana because there are so many diverse accents in this state that I'm not sure you could pin one down and complain about something as small as that.

Also one more question. Why does Anna Paquin dress like she's from high school in this show?

So as soon as you graduate you must update your wardrobe, hm, wish I was that rich. I think some of the dresses are lovely. :-)

vanima i dont think you understand where i was going with that. i was saying that she should dress more maturely/elegant . i guess this is what "southern girls" wear now a days.

First off, I think Anna Paquin is perfect for her role, even if you think her accent is off. To be honest, I have no idea what you would consider an "authentic" southern accent, and I don't really care if it's not right because I get the gist of it and I'm not from the south, so it doesn't really matter to me. The rest of the cast I think acts amazingly as well.
Secondly, the clothing she wears in the book is almost identical to how her outfits are described in the book, especially the first time she went to Fangtasia in Shreveport, so if you have a problem with it take it up with Charlaine Harris; as far as I can tell, in that aspect they're just following the book.
The only part that would normally frustrate me is how some of the things they keep identical to the book and others are so drastically different, but I personally, in this instance, actually find it refreshing at times because despite the fact that I've read the book the show is still new and intriguing and I never know what's going to happen.
If you don't like the show or take issue with it, don't watch it. It's really just that simple

ok . i don't agree with comment made about tera, she was raised primarily around white people most of her life so what do you expect. A contrary to popular belief , Not all black people sound the same.I also can't stand how most people try to compare it to the book you have to remember the show/characters although "BASED" off the series of books is going to be written differently for television. I'm impressed because i started with a biased attitude before the first episode and it automatically hooked me, Im not one for the vampire genre.

I've read the books and I love them, but I also love the show. meanswing, I have to say this, I believe you are being unrealistic and unfair. Why the hell should Sookie dress elegantly? She's a BARMAID in a small-town in LOUISIANA. Not to rip on Louisiana or anything. It's just, really. You think you're going to find the new trends in a small town anywhere? Um, no. Maybe you should leave the casting and wardrobe issues to the professional.s

Okay people. I am from Louisiana and it's not that the accent's are bad. I just don't think that people realize that most of us DON'T HAVE THESE ACCENTS!! More importantly, the accent of Rene' would not be spoken by anyone in northern Louisiana nor would there be a town of Bon Temps up there either. That accent is only in the southern region where I am from and very few people even speak that way anymore. The only thing that is accurate of northern Louisiana is the look of the town.

Thank you maindish. That is the point i was trying to make. "Yall" need to take a trip here sometime and realize we moved on from the Gone With the Wind Era. We have color tvs, cellphones, and the internets.

Oh goodness, enough with this already. Yes, we get that you are peeved they didn't consult you on what you think the south is like, so please just leave it? The vast majority is obviously happy with the show, and I personally think Sookie's outfits are lovely. I'm Chinese, and if I were to object to every inaccurate portrayal of the Chinese, I'll have a full time job. Besides, next to us being portrayed either as sex-crazed prostitutes or hard ass assassins, what are you complaining about?

This is a review area isn't it. Im stating my opinion. Who knows, maybe someone working for True Blood will see my post and help improve the actors accents. The reason i was picky about the accents is that it makes Louisianians sound ignorant. Your taking me the wrong way. "Me love the show long time" but without the accents...Actually one of the only shows i watch nowadays.
