SideReel Review - The Avengers (2012) starring Robert Downey Jr & Chris Evans - by Yael Tygiel

The Avengers (2012)

Written and Directed by Buffy creator Joss Whedon, The Avengers, is an action-packed comic-book adaptation that introduces a rag-tag team of Super-humans to the mainstream: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Black Widow (I just want to point out that Hawkeye and The Black Willow aren't super-human, they're super trained humans).

The main story revolved around Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) drafting the Avengers to save the world. Honestly, I love a good comic-book movie. Also, I'm pretty biased towards Marvel and Mr. Stan Lee. And, generally, I'm a supporter of Mr. Joss Whedon. That being said, the villain, Thor's brother Loki, was already the big bad in the Thor movie. And nothing in this film was improved (or even remotely made special) by the 3D factor. But, I have to applaud Mr. Whedon for introducing each member of the Avengers team and distributing screen time equally between them, not focusing too much on the romance between Clint and Natasha, or Tony and Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow).

The clear fan favorite was Bruce Banner, well, at least "the other guy." The audience erupted with laughter at almost EVERYTHING the Hulk did or grunted. And How I Met Your Mother fans should be excited to see Cobie Smulders strutting around in a skintight catsuit. Personally, I'd like to see an entire movie setting up the story of Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow) played by Scarlett Johansson.

Overall, I have to urge you to see this movie on the big screen (do NOT wait for Video… er… DVD… er … BluRay) as two huge fight scenes constituted the majority of this film and watching The Avengers at home will not do it justice. Also, as with most Marvel movies, stay seated during the credits to catch a treat/tease of the next movies (Don't try to deny it. There will be sequel)

The Avengers is rated PG-13 and is now playing in theaters everywhere.
