SideReel Review - Brave (2012) starring Kelly MacDonald, Emma Thomson, & Billy Connolly - by Yael Tygiel

Brave (2012)

Disney/ Pixar's latest creation, Brave, is a Scottish story about a little princess named Merida who gets a witch to cast a spell, which doesn't go as she hoped.

Let me first say, it's no 'Up'. Nor is it 'Toy Story' or 'Finding Nemo', but Brave finally gives voice to a girl who, even as a Disney princess, doesn't want to marry her prince! In fact, she doesn't want any of it (take that Ariel). The feisty, bushy-red-haired Merida is a young archer (I'd even go as far as saying she's better than Katniss), and all she wants it to enjoy her youth - finally, a story about holding on to your childhood and being yourself… and choosing your prince based on love, instead of strength and appearance.

I love the strength of our young heroine (I really hope girls will look up to her as an inspirational goal instead of the previous princess who lay waiting for their prince to save them) and the message of family - what girl doesn't argue with her mother about marriage and fate? Voice by an all-star cast (Kelly MacDonald, Emma Thomson, Craig Ferguson, and Billy Connolly) Brave is definitely a cute and enchanting tale.

Brave is rated PG and is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Just as an FYI: if your child scares easily, the bear fights (yes, plural) might be a bit much.
