'The Big C' will end with four one-hour episodes


Showtime is bringing "The Big C" to an end next season, and the show will change its format to do so.The final season will be a "limited-run series" of four hour-long episodes, Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins said Monday (July 30) at the TV Critics Association press tour. "From its inception, the show has been unique in its premise and its tone, and we're excited we've come up with a unique and format-breaking way to bring a conclusion to Cathy's [Laura Linney] story," Nevins says.Even among Showtime's comedies-that-are-also-dramas, "The Big C" has often felt a little heavy. The change to a one-hour format could signal a turn to more overt drama as the story comes to an end.In the bigger picture, though, Nevins says Showtime has a "contract with the audience" to bring its shows to a conclusion."It needs to be planned," he says.
