Countdown to Sons of Anarchy Part One - "Sovereign"

In exactly one week Sons of Anarchy will kick off its fifth season on FX, and to help prepare you for the return of one of television's best Dramas, ever, TVOvermind will be running a series of articles offering a spoiler lite look into the themes, plot, and characters of what I feel will be the best season ever of SOA.  Let's start with a single word:  "Sovereign".

The word "Sovereign" is not only the title of the Sons of Anarchy season 5 premiere, it also seems to pack quite a bit of weight thematically in an overall sense.  On its own the word means a ruler or authority figure, or a group that possesses the power.  I'm sure in a superficial sense this is exactly what SOA creator and Executive Producer Kurt Sutter is referring to overtly, with the top layer being Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) ascent to the head of the table, and in the developing story-lines with Sons of Anarchy's new characters like Damon Pope (Harold Perrineau) and Nero (Jimmy Smits), each symbolizing very different takes on how Sovereignty can be wielded.
