The Syndicate Series 2 Episode 1 (BBC) Review

In a time of recession and belt-tightening, it’s no surprise that shows like The Syndicate are being made. The ultimate dream of winning the lottery is one that most people secretly hold, but then there’s that big sweeping statement of ‘be careful what you wish for’ that comforts us while watching. These people are rich and happy now, but we know that weeks of trauma await them. We can theorize about what we’d do with the money, but then feel safe in the knowledge that cash alone can’t buy you happiness. Last year’s series was an unexpected treat, with five shop workers winning more money than they knew what to do with. Some reacted well, some badly, but absolutely everyone had something awful happen to them over the course of the series. Now we have five (or six) brand new faces. This syndicate is made up of low-paid hospital workers who could all do with the extra money, and this first episode centers on young single mother Becky and her own mum Mandy.
