Smash Season 2 Review “Opening Night”

There’s was a point in this week’s Smash, ‘Opening Night’, when it felt as though things were winding down for the show quite nicely. There was a lovely sense of closure and, suddenly, the fact that the series will most likely get cancelled in a couple of weeks didn’t seem like such an awful thing. But then Smash pulled what it always does, and everything got frustrating and weird again. I’ve never really had the same problems with the show as other critics, finding it entertaining enough each week and genuinely engaging with some of the characters over time, but this was the first time that I understood what they were talking about. There are flashes of greatness in this episode, with all the sparkly fabulousness of ‘Bombshell’s opening night, but the relationship and character crap invaded that greatness and made it ridiculous all over again.
