Heroes Reaction Time: "True Confessions" - Season 4, Episode 5 Review - Featured

Hey Heroes, here's my true confession: THIS EPISODE MADE ME WANT TO DIE.

What exactly made it so horrific and disastrous and impossible to watch without feeling sick? Let's run down the list:

1. Claire and Gretchen and Sorority Life

The sorority legacy system. The jealous best friend. Who turns out to actually be a creepy stalker-murderer. Who turns out to actually be a lesbian with horrible taste. I don't watch Lifetime movies, but I'm willing to bet that this episode of Heroes ripped off at least a couple of them. It was a violent struggle to stop myself from changing the channel during Claire and Gretchen's ultimate confrontation. And as if this plot wasn't already enough of a train wreck, it turns out that the whole fiasco has been orchestrated by Samuel Sullivan by way of an excessively perky sorority sister who can turn invisible and likes to push things. Claire's storylines have never been good, but I think this episode hit an all-time low.

2. Petrelli Family Angst

Yes. We get it. They've got issues. But did we really need to spend even five minutes replaying the whole Angela-"Oh, I'm so worried about my Nathankins!" Peter-"Why can't you pay attention to me! ANGST!" scenario? Thank god that didn't last long.

3. Speaking of Peter, Emma and the Greatest Wtf of All

When the new character was introduced, I was worried. When she started seeing sounds as colors in a way that presented them like a Heroes ability, I was confused. When she and Peter crossed paths in a significant way, I was grim.

Skip ahead to this episode: When it turned out the older lady doctor was her mother, I sighed heavily. When Peter did some excessive touching during the ability transfer, I rolled my eyes. When the child choir showed up, I started banging my head on the table. When Emma and Peter started exchanging sickeningly adorable glances through the haze of colored lights, I tried to gouge my eyes out. When they sat together and played the piano, my soul shriveled and died.

This is by far the most dreadful thing that has ever happened on Heroes. And I am including Maya AND the New Orleans plotline, which are my two favorite go-to examples of how low Heroes can go. The only (barely qualifying) positives in this corner of the universe were that a) it was explained that seeing colors doesn't make you spontaneously able to play the cello and b) it actually IS a power...but I still don't get it and really don't see why this entire thing had to happen at all.

4. Samuel and Company

So remember how I was proclaiming Samuel was the best thing to happen to Heroes in a long, long time? Well, that was before the writer's took his slightly twisted family man demeanor and turned him into a religious cult leader. Who happens to live at and direct a carnival. Which can apparently appear out of thin air. And this is all filmed through a mysterious mirage/haze that I think is supposed to be dust but more closely resembles a film effect commonly used in drug trip sequences. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME? I REALLY want it to make sense. But I'm starting to lose hope that it ever will.

5. Sylar/Nathan...Sylar? Gabriel? What?

Not even much respite here. Once we finally got to the point - which is that Gabriel Gray has been born anew and has the potential to maybe not become Sylar - I was already bored. It was nice to have the clock ticking back. And, as an actor, I appreciate seeing the very talented Zachary Quinto go through the steps of a classic acting exercise - seeing the world with completely fresh and innocent eyes. But he's already wandered into the hands of Samuel Sullivan, it looks like he's going to be getting all his self-awareness back, and any hope of a new direction has been sufficiently crushed.

On the plus side, next week looks fairly epic. Hiro and HRG are back in the spotlight, Sylar and Samuel are sharing scenes, and it looks like there should be little-to-no time with Claire or Tracy. *fingers crossed*

(This review also posted on my blog at http://meltedbrain.wordpress.com)

EDIT: This episode is actually entitled "Hysterical Blindness." I don't know how I got so completely off-track. Call it a brainfart. Or just an inability to read my SideReel schedule properly, combined with the fact that I didn't quite catch the title as I was watching the episode. Apologies.

wooooooo!!!!!!!!! you alls seems to not even like to watch this show or just watching to be able to have a subject to complain about. i can agree with the fact that this season don't start well but for my part usualy i don't watch thing i don't enjoy and if i have certain hope, at lest i watch it until the end for giving it a chance before complaining. by the way, we obviously see that emma already knew playing base cause she have one in her house so we can guess that she's not born deaf. and her mother also talk about a accident where she lost her husband so she probably became deaf because of that accident. but i find that this power look like the august rush movie and way much in the episode 4 when peter see her in the park playing. for my part i've found the samuel arrival bad. but i'm all agree with you when you talk about gabriel/sylar i have though totally the same. and about the travelling carnival we can guess that a puppet of samuel have the power to teletransport stuff from a place to a other. and i also agree with the thing you say about the invisible girl, samuel haven't sent his more powerful weapon to bring her but it also a good way to spy on her... yes i give you that one it a little bit trashy but i guess all those thing will bring us somewhere. And CCINBRAINSURGERY SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!!!(or keep your fingers and thought

I don't know what everyone's deal is, in every story there has to be an opener... obviously you don't understand that because you can;t just come from season three and keep going up hill, you have to restart with the mysteries and the introduction of new characters and places. Seriously, if all you're going to do is complain about the show and how terrible you think it is, then maybe you shouldn't be watching it. For as much drama as you are causing by throwing your little tantrums, you might as well be watching Gossip Girl.

I feel like I need to clarify that I DO in fact like this show. Heck, I love this show. That's why I watch it. I just really disliked this episode - if I didn't have any hope or delight in Heroes, I wouldn't have such a strong reaction when it disappoints me.

Right just explain to me why you are watching the show. You are moaning about every single storyline this season. If you hate them all and we are now 4 episodes into each of the storylines, seriously stop watching it. I'd rather there were less people watching it than people who are just watching it so they can moan.
I for one enjoyed it, this season is a heck of an improvement over the last couple of seasons, yet you are moaning like it's getting worse. Be thankful that there is one story arch instead of characters jumping around stories and motives three times an episode.

I agree with Finch and the others. Why bother writing out an awfull review about a tv show you clearly dont enjoy. Do you really think your review is going to change opinions? Why not go and watch a show you like and leave Heroes alone?

WEll i myself liked this episode very VERY much.(Here's my little review)I liked how emma's power became something more than just seeing colors, she can control and can actually cause damage. VErY NEAT.
Peter's power it's alright, it sucks for him that he gets stuck with one power at a time, but maybe there's room for improvement in the near future, *LETS KEEP FINGERS CROSSED*
Rebecca, i like the fact that there's another young hero in the show, everybody is all old and stuff.(not complaining, just FINALLY)
Tracy, i don't have a problem with her being lesbian, if you didn't like the fact that they kissed well i guess you must be a homophobic.
My favorite character is Claire, YES, CLAIRE BENNET.And the fact that Samuel and his family want to add either her or (someone else from the campus, but her mostly) adds more interest to her story.)
WE didn't see much of hiro, but the way he ended up in Peter's crib, well I am curious as to why he ended up there and what will happen to him.I Sure hope its nothing serious.
And the fact that sylar doesn't remember who he is, well its good let's just wait where it takes us.
I love all the new characters, love the old ones, LOVE THE SHOW, and will keep watching it until i die.

I don't agree with most of these but on some points. I'd have to concede.
1. Claire/Gretchen
Okay, the lesbo part was weird, I'll give you that. But I guess it doesn't necessarily mean that Claire is going the lesbian way. To be honest, I'm enjoying her storyline this season. The writers aren't pushing her to be this season's really important character like they have before (yet, always have to put yet). And I don't think Gretchen's gonna die soon, I mean, it's just a crush right?
2. Angela and Peter
I saw nothing wrong with this scene. I was surprised because I thought it was the other way around - didn't Angela favor Peter over Nathan before? That must be why Peter's so angsty during that scene. But wth? Isn't Angela supposed to be good at being secretive? She was so obvious this episode to any of us.
3. Peter and Emma
This is where I disagree mos of all. For once, Heroes has the workings of a love story that isn't based on something stupid or juvenile like prophecies (Matt and Daphne, though her death was a tear-jerker), teenage hormones (did all of Claire's boyfriends die or something?), and the whole I-have-amnesia-so-I'll have-sex-with-the-first-woman-I-see-then-leave-her-in-an-alternate-future scenario (Caitlin and the worst love story I've seen in my entire life). I'm very impressed because I thought it was impossible for Heroes to get this cheesy and still make it look good. I went "aww" when I saw their scenes but maybe that's just me. But at least Peter isn't pushing hero life in her face. More explanation for Emma's fissure power please.
Though I didn't see the point of introducing the old lady doctor as Emma's mother two episodes later. And Peter's epic running fail? It was both hilarious and...well just that. And I don't get people complaining about Peter's downgrading. If he just got more powerful with all of these characters that Heroes shoved into our mouths no one would be able to beat him, ergo no story.
4. Samuel and the Carnies
Er, religious cult leader? He prayed and philosophized. That's about as religious as he, or any one of use probably gets. I find the disappearance very intriguing though. They probably have someone who can do that.
But I must agree that he seemed unusually sucky this episode. His character didn't get that many good lines and the mystery's all but gone.
5. Sylar
You need to find a new show if you thought his story sucked this episode. The whole I crazy thing looked out of place but adorable on Sylar. The psychiatrist woman was a nice touch. Finally, Heroes is going back to adding one episode characters that still manage to advance the plot. We have a long time before he gets complete self-awareness back. Samuel had no intention on grabbing Matt so they probably won't meet for some time, ergo no mind fixing. But once Claire and Peter end up at the carnival, well we'll see...
Next week is fairly epic? Let's hope so :)As an added thought, we finally saw the Sylar scene that was shown during the first episode. Does this mean we get to see Barbara? (check the first episode openers - we see Tracy looking shocked to see a blond woman - or it could just be Claire or something but it would suck for Heroes not to exhaust all their remaining stories before it ends, which is fairly close)
To everyone else, calm down. He obviously still cares enough for the show to at least watch it and give it a chance. Not like ccinbrainsurgery who apparently managed to go to Heroes's sidereel page and comment on article he didn't read.
So...finger's crossed that it gets better :D

did anyone else think the whole sylar not knowing who he was story was slightly reminiscent of peter when he Landed in Ireland in the dreadful season 2
it was good to see that emma can actually do stuff with her seeing sounds 'Ability' but what she gonna do stroll about with a cello and strike it when shes in danger? it makes no sense to me really
and samuel seems to be annoying me more and more adding that girl to the equation didnt help either
this so far has got to be the worst season of heroes for meit seems like they're getting really desperateeven season 2 wasnt this badand im a die hard heroes fan
im hoping by hiro landing in peters house that peter can get his ability and do a bit of teleporting or something because this whole 'im a paramedic and i fancy the deaf chick from the filing room' business has gotten old already

@woozie
1) Claire/Gretchin
This did surprise me a little bit because I thought (as did most others) that she was behind her roommates death, but it does nothing to aleviate the fact that claire is a boring character that adds nothing but a little youth to the predominately aged cast.In season 1 she was the cheerleader who who always inadvertedly revealed her powers to a random person and it seems that nothin has changed. I dont understand why the writers love her so much and want to put her in another main storyline maybe its because she is blonde and a cheerleader it means something to them.
2) Angela/Peter
Nope Angela has always favoured Nathan. Peter's benefactor and supporter was the black man he was looking after in the first series. I cant say that it wasnt needed to show how much more Angela cares about Nathan but I do think that part was overdone and waaaay to blatant
3) Peter/Emma
That was way to cheesy for this show, you may like romances (I do to sometimes) but when it is put into a show in the lamest cheesiest way possible it doesnt work. The docter was introduced as her mother to try and give a little bit of background - She had a promising future, had a man, feels guilty for her man dieing etc etc basically an over used plot pusher. It makes it definate that now she has discovered her powers she will be more motivated since she apparently "isnt" at the moment and also makes it obvious that a romance will be introduced
Her power I still dont understand but maybe the writers where thinking along the lines of how different frequencies can shatter glass but didnt want to show it as another high pitched yell.
4 Samuel
Yes he does have a bit of cult leader qualities I can see that other then that I'm not going to really comment on him I find its best to judge an actor only on the show they are currently in. You judge him on previous works you will probably get dissappointed sooner or later
5 Sylar
This has to be my biggest gripe about Heroes. Sylar is the only villain needed in the Heroes series yet the writers always seem to forget that and spend the first half of the series with him, powerless/soul searching/family searching or the latest starting again so that they can introduce a half formed barely developed new bad guy that everybody is supposed to be feared, but in the end pales to Sylar when the writers do decide to bring him back. Adam seemed to be good untill we found out that he was just an immortal guy who can hold a grudge for a very long time. Deanko was just a typical army guy who was outwitted so many times he was a joke and Sylar had him wrapped around his pinky toe. Even as a figment of Parkmans imagination he is showing he is capable of so much and when he is finally back in his body do you think he will follow Samuel? I Dont Think So he may work with Samuel (as he will have internal struggles with "Peter Gabriel" but in the end it will be Sylar who wins and once there is no more need for Samuel he will be dead.

To all others who are complaining about this review Shut Up and take your own advice IF YOU DONT LIKE IT DONT READ IT. Not everyone will have the same outlook as you the reviewer has a right to voice theirs I dont think the makers of Heroes cares if you defend it or not. It just looks PATHETIC

First of all:It's getting quite annoying to read a discussion about people's comments rather than reading an actual discussion of the show. So please...
Well, I'm a heroes fan as well, to quiet everyone who's about to tell me to stop watching, but ...
... in my opinion the biggest problem is that the show has just slowed down in this season. It seems that everything that has happened so far is all the "Heroes" dealing with very personal and usual issues. I personally don't like that there is no one coherent storyline.
I'm not suggesting that there'd one good vs. evil plot, but in my opinion the show could do so much more with its premise. Don't you think in a world with lots of people having abilities and powers there'd be more exciting stuff going down? I'm not a writer, but I think they've kind of lost a bit of their creativity.
On the other hand: Everytime they show Samuel (and they've shown him a lot) it feels like there's something big building up and I am always waiting for it to unfold. Unfortunately the past episodes have all left me with the same feeling. So my plea is: Just start the story with Samuel. It took a whole episode just to give somebody a compass, at that pace Samuels gonna be recruiting people until February.

Dude, if you don't like the show stop watching and then quit posting.
Also I would like to say that you, like so many people since season 2 was fucked with by the writers strike, have started looking for what is wrong with the show instead of what is right.
