ABC Reveals Comedy Lineup for Fall 2013
ABC’s announced fall line-up of 13 new shows includes five comedies and one reality series, (or as they prefer to call it, "alternative series"). That series is The Quest, and alas, there is no trailer for it yet, but we can tell you, it’s basically The Amazing Race meets The Lord of the Rings. (!!)
That leaves us with ABC’s comedy line-up, which for the most part, all feature actors known primarily for their movie work.
The highest profile comedy is, without a doubt, Super Fun Night, starring Rebel Wilson, who hit it big in the movies Bridesmaids, Bachelorette, and Pitch Perfect. She’s super hot right now, and you can bet ABC is super stoked to have her in the family. Super! As for the show, it’s about three friends who decide to break out of the rut of their weekly Friday get-togethers, and actually… go out!
Wendi McClendon-Covey, another woman who made a splash in the movie Bridesmaids (as the mother of three boys who had to crack their blankets in half), has a featured role as the mother in The Goldbergs, which is set in the 80’s and loosely based on the childhood of actor Adam Goldberg. Jeff Garlin co-stars as the dad.
Back in modern days we have Back in the Game, starring James Caan. Yep, James Caan is starring in a network comedy. But actually, his is a supporting role, playing father to a newly single mother who moves back home. Think Bad News Bears-meets-every other comedy about adults moving back in with their parents. (How to Live With Your Parents, we hardly knew ya!)
Now that Happy Endings is no longer part of the ABC family, they have a void to fill when it comes to multiple storylines centered on twentysomething friends. Enter Mixology, which will take place in one bar, on one night, as a bunch of friends try to find love, (or, at least, a worthy hook-up).
The last of the comedies is Trophy Wife, starring Malin Akerman as the titular trophy, wife number three to Bradley Whitford’s Pete. Along with an instant family, she must contend with Pete’s two previous wives (played by Marcia Gay Harden and Michaela Watkins), a stepson’s undying crush, and disapproving schoolteachers. Oh, and also, cooking breakfast.
