Are trailers ruining our movies?

So I have been stewing on the idea of movie trailers possibly spoiling a movie. What really bothers me are the ones that some dumb ass at the studios allow to reach us. The ones with to much information or to long of a cut on something that should of been left for the big screen. Is viral marketing getting out of hand?

What do you think?

That's a really good question. It's a delicate balance between getting me excited and telling me too much. I've stopped watching trailers for The Dark Knight, but I'm still watching Hellboy II trailers.

I think you have a point. Although I get to see Hellboy tomorrow so I am excited for that one big time!

i love trailers but i totally get your point, sometimes they play a funny scene so much that once you get the chance to watch the movie that particular scene is not so funny anymore...

The Dark Knight...I agree that it has a lot of viral marketing, but even as an exaggeration, the number 30 indicates you have a slight misconception...there's only 3 actual trailers, one teaser trailer, and a bunch of clips. Not as if my analysis proves anything except that I'm hopelessly stuck in a world of technicalities and semantics, but w.e. ;)

I do kinda think I've been overly inundated with Dark Knight clips. It doesn't really change my excitement level though. I still can't wait to see it, especially on IMAX.

Another thing I have found is that the trailer plays the only 2 passably funny or interesting scenes from a movie, and with careful editing making what turns out to be an atrocious film appear somewhat decent; then I go and see the the actual movie and am supremely disappointed.

The problem there is your vast optimism. :-)

the dark knight trailers are out of hand, but in general i don't think its too bad...although there's always the option of not watching the trailer if its a movie you were gonna watch anyway

Hellboy 2 was a very solid flick, in second place behind Iron Man for me. Great movie and a great vision by Del Toro. Full review will be posted on Friday Morning early!!

i think that trailers are ruining it for mei saw the trailers to get smart and i laughed at it all and decided to go see it, when i did i found that i was all laughed out because the trailer just played all of the funny scenes... it was a spoiler for me but it didnt give me the whole plot line. With the dark knight, i dont think that i have got the whole plot linewhat cloverfield did was interesting... it was intriguing, though some could tell what it was abouttrailers dont do us muck good and are almost like a unspecific spoiler, if you know what i mean by that

Check out the Trailer for "The curious case of Benjamin Button". This is a perfect example of what you are talking about. However, it does make me want to see the movie even more - it just looks awesome.
