Scandal Season 3 Review “Mrs. Smith Goes to Washington”

I always expect Scandal to be explosive, but um, I meant figuratively. Not literally. Holy cow. This was a real whirlwind of an episode and now I’m just…I can’t even…

A woman named Mary showed up at Pope and Associates asking them to look into a family issue. It was a bit odd though because she didn’t want to stay and discuss it. What she neglected to mention was that she also had a homemade bomb vest strapped to her chest and she intended to blow up her congressman unless he got her some answers. Apparently, Mary’s son was branded a terrorist and killed in an FBI raid. She wanted to find out what the file said about her son, but it was classified under the Patriot Act. Mary decided that her only other option was to take extreme measures. Olivia pulled every string she could think of to get the file declassified, but it was all to no avail. Ultimately, Fitz called Olivia and laid some very heavy news on her. Mary’s son was actually an undercover CIA agent who had recruited 57 other CIA agents to infiltrate various Al Qaeda cells. The FBI was unaware that the kid was an undercover agent and they killed him by mistake. However, Olivia couldn’t tell Mary any of that. If Olivia had told her, then the 57 other undercover agents would have been outed, tortured, and killed. That’s also why the file could never be declassified. Olivia was presented with a choice: tell Mary the truth and give her some peace while getting 57 other people killed in the process or lie. Olivia lied. She told Mary that the file said her son was a terrorist, and Mary just couldn’t live with that. She let Olivia and the congressman go, but she detonated the bomb and killed herself.
