Peaky Blinders Series 1 Episode 5 & Episode 6 (BBC2) Review

I suspect that the thing Peaky Blinders will be remembered for most will be style, and the actual substance of the six-part series will be something that only a section of viewers will take to heart. There’s absolutely no questioning the unique and striking visual and auditory identity that the show possessed throughout its run on BBC2 but, while masterfully written and acted, it never intended to be viewed by a mass and varied audience (hence it’s place on BBC2 rather than BBC1).

That said, this finale was a good example of everything that made it so great. Cillian Murphy has been the best part of an incredibly talented cast, and the various threads are wrapped up quite nicely within two hours. Some of those threads do end up leading us with a bitter sweet feeling, or even with genuine a sense of genuine tragedy, but happy endings were never going to be had by all. Tommy may have been on his way towards redemption through his relationship with Grace, but Campbell’s actions in the final few minutes will likely have put an end to that.
