"I Know What You Did Last Summer" was exactly that. We finally learned just what Sam was up to while Dean was in hell. We also were introduced to a couple new characters: a girl who could hear angels talking in her head and a new badass demon. Of course there was another big occurrence, proof positive of a Sam and Ruby hook up.
It took us nine episodes, but Sam finally laid his cards on the table. First of all, I'm just glad Sam told Dean what went on. Since "Lazarus Rising" we've been dying to know what went on with him while Dean was gone. We also needed to find out how Ruby reentered the situation and helped him hone his demon powers. As suspected, Sam was totally lost without his brother. He turned super self-destructive. Jared did a good job conveying his complete devastation over Dean's death. And not surprisingly, Sam's descent into despair involved a lot of drinking. Much like what Dean was doing last episode. And if we're to believe what Sam said in the pilot, John spent some quality time with the bottle himself. Amidst his alcohol-soaked existence, Sam was ambushed by a couple of demons. Turned out one was Ruby, who just got out of her Lilith-imposed time in hell. After Ruby disposed of the demon assisting in said ambush, she tried to get Sam to put down the bottle long enough to hone his powers and team up to hunt down and destroy Lilith. Apparently the now fugitive from hell had to endure horrible things and do terrible things in order to get in good with Lilith and make it back to Sam.
