It’s absolutely crazy that Dan Harmon has returned to the series for Season 5. In my interview with Harmon leading into this season, we spoke about how unlikely it was that he’d ever return to the show after Sony and NBC let him go at the end of Season 3. This was something that just doesn’t happen. And yet here we are.

I didn’t find Season 4 a total disaster. It had some strong episodes and funny moments throughout. But it never fully meshed and its low points were notably low. You could feel the struggle a lot of talented people were having trying to evoke the work of someone whose very specific vision had fueled this series and how hampered they were trying to make what they felt Dan Harmon would do when, well, they weren’t Dan Harmon.
