Zach Braff checks out of 'Scrubs'

This upcoming season of "Scrubs" will be the actor's last, said showrunner Bill Lawrence at Wednesday's Television Critics Assn. press tour panel. The ABC Studios series arrives on the Alphabet this season after seven seasons on NBC.

There was no announcement whether this would be the last season of the show, but it will be Braff's. The actor said he would be open to returning as a guest star, and could possibly also direct. He has been attached to indie movie "Open Hearts" as actor, writer and director.

"The end of the show will be about J.D. leaving the hospital," Lawrence said. "When you leave, it's about holding on to your relationships."

When asked how long "Scrubs" would go on, he said, "You can't kill this show."

"Next year we'll be on CBS," Braff quipped.

Most of the upcoming season has already been shot and will air in midseason.

With out Zack in Scrubs it won't be the same, like he's the whole story and he makes it amazing, like there's other good actors but with out him and Turk and Eliot working together it wont be the same, i don't even think i would watch it, so that's really crap, happy they got Courtney Cox in but, even if it is only for a couple of episodes.

what the hell?! Is it even possible to have Scrubs without JD? Isn't the whole show based around him? What, they're gonna have Turk be the main character with 'daydreams' now? Or they're gonna bring in an intern that's like JD in every way that daydreams? Or just have the same character but with a different actor? It's not that the show won't be good without a character like JD, it's that the show won't be good without JD himself, played by Zach Braff, as he is.

If Zach leaves you have to end the show... trying to stretch it out like they are is just going to make this show a JOKE in the eyes of everyone. It's an easy way to lose respect...

you cant take zach out of Scrubs. Especially if you want to continue the series. Turk being the main character would not be as good, nor would Elliot. And what about Janitor? Would he start picking on Turk (which makes no sence as turk is married to the only person he fears, Carla). And what about Dr.Cox? If you want to continue the show, J.D leaving would just be illogical. And if they do continue Scrubs, it would be no where near as good as seasons 1-8 (assuming 8 is as good as the other seasons). Especially in comparison. J.D makes the show, without him, would it be anywhere near as amazing as it is? It would just be retarded to take out the main character (i.e taking Michael Scott out of The Office, Tina Fey out of 30 Rock, Jerry out of Seinfeld. I think you get my point).

man this really sucks! i actually feel sad.. like someone leaving his town or friends behind.. scrubs is my all time favorite sitcoms.. although i used to LOVE sienfeld but scrubs really toped it simply because u can relate to the characters in a human/emotional way.. yes it is comedy, but it really is deep at times.. taking anyone out -and more so JD- will really kill it.. JD is scrubs and all the rest are like a family.. it feels really sad to see that happen :(

Umm...they should just end this show gracefully when he leaves and not turn it into a train wreck and have to shut it down awkwardly.

Scrubs is an amazing show ( I have seen every episode at least three times that is official addiction) but I don't think it'll be half as good without J.D! I'm glad that they're doing an 8th season since season seven never had the finale thanks to the damn writers strike, but the show should end there!

How will that work? All of the episodes are about him. "My first day" ect. What will they call the episodes now? "The rest of the hospitals first day without JD" ?

It seems to me from reading the information above that it was Zach's decision to leave the show, I mean, come on guys; it sucks that he wants to leave, but at the same time can you imagine being stuck doing the same show for the rest of your life? he's already dedicated 8 years to it!
It really sucks, and I agree that they should just end the series with his departure from the hospital, and they probably will if they start the 9th season and no one watches it. It's all about ratings, and there won't be any good ones if no one's watching.
I say congrats to Zach Braff and I hope he has a really successful career after Scrubs!

"The end of the show will be about J.D. leaving the hospital," Lawrence said. "When you leave, it's about holding on to your relationships."
You've got to be kidding. J.D. can't possible leave the hospital! And Zach can't just leave the show! What would be next? How will the show go on? They'd also *need* to make this the last series because there's no way that Scrubs can function without it's main character. This sucks.
