is there some unwritten law which states a tv show based on a book has to follow the premise and basis of the books down to a tee?
no, there isn't.

If you've read the book series, then you've already been through that perspective. Watching it unfold in another way is still cool and gives a fresh take on what could've happened. I like that it's not EXACTLY like the book. It also gives the writers an opportunity to continue on with the show past the original book ideas. I think it's great!
