NBC Cuts Back Heroes' Episode Order for Next Season - Featured

Heroes' life span will be a little shorter next season.

NBC plans to cut the number of episodes of its superhero drama from 25 this season to 18 to 20 in its fourth season, Ad Age reports.

The reasons for the cutback are legion: Though the show's latest episodes have reinvigorated many fans, a series of complicated and wide-ranging storylines cost the show ratings in Season 2 and earlier this season.

Also, NBC will have five fewer primetime hours to fill in 2009-10 season, thanks to Jay Leno's new hour-long program at 10 pm weeknights. And other networks are also experimenting with condensed seasons: ABC's Lost has kept to 16 or 17 episodes in recent seasons, and CBS's Harper's Island has a 13-episode format that could be repeated (with a new setting and cast) if the murder mystery succeeds with viewers.

Though Heroes debuted to strong ratings in 2006, since the 2007-08 writers strike its viewership has slipped to about 7.7 million viewers on average, four million fewer than it earned before the work stoppage, according to Nielsen.

The show's writers have already started planning for the show's fifth volume, which will involve a series of mysterious deaths. Or could they be murders?

20 episodes is still good enough. I think if it was cut down to 12 there would be reason to panic as I don't think they could pull off shorter seasons as it has such a big cast with multiple storylines. Dexter, Californication and Tru Blood on the other hand do it perfectly. Plus Lost is finishing with fewer episodes this season and for next year and they have made an amazing fifth season keeping fans glued and thrilled. Sometimes less can be more.

Just Waiting for this show to die... It's storyline is too complicated and not nearly interesting enough. I am 1 of the 4 million plus that stopped viewing this after the second season. I only made it through the second season because I kept saying to myself, "It'll get better", but it didn't. Seriously, who wants to watch a show about very rare humans with special abilities when a very "rare" human with some new special ability appears in every episode? I don't see this show making it into 5 seasons, even with the lame cliffhanger of deaths... or could they be murders...?

I dont mind it being cut down because some of the episodes are useless they have nothing to do with anything else and they over complicate things after but i still watch heroes its a good show despite the fact that it is being stretched alot

to danaki i want to say, they never mentioned a fifth season. they gave that cliffhanger for the fifth VOLUME, which is part of the fourth season and the fourth season is definitely going to be made. i don't see it as being a huge issue that they are cutting the next season down to only 20 episodes. they should still be able to handle the story line in that amount of episodes. the 11 episodes of season 2 definitely killed the ending though. I've seen the scenes they shot for the alternate ending of season 2 and it would have been a far more interesting plot to see played out.
