It's incredibly hard to resist stating every week how much I love Pushing Daisies, so, I just won't say it! But, well, because it looks like Pushing Daisies could be in trouble, I suppose it's proper to gush since it's well-deserved love and hopefully that gushing love will turn into magical new Daisies addicts as well!
So all that aside, this week's episode was another wonderful one as Emerson's love of the dim sum restaurant below his office turned into a troublesome murder case that not only included tasty pork buns, but also the dog trainer, Simone, from Emerson's Season 1 crime-solving.
While this did lead to some romance for Emerson, the best of this situation was in Simone using her dog training on poor Emerson, and also that she helped him out with the case by explaining the secret poker games played with food that were going on at the dim sum place, which was the reason the chef, Bao Di, was murdered.
This case was spot-on the usual Daisies way of being an interesting, but quirky and fun case as it led to Chuck and Olive dressing up as Chinese dim sum waitresses, Emerson dressing up like a slick gambler, and Ned dressing up like a rich cowboy, of course.
But before the dynamic duo of Chuck and Olive got the chance to dive into the dim sum case, they were investigating something on their own - Ned's family. This was drummed up because a strange man, Dwight Dixon (played by guest star Stephen Root), appeared in The Pie Hole - a man who gave Olive shivers of attraction, and Ned shivers of detraction. Interesting. It seemed for a moment, since this man mentioned that Ned's pies were as good as his mother's, that maybe this man was Ned's father, but instead, the man was a "friend" of Ned's father's who was looking for the father.
This brought up the questions of if this guy was really friends with the father, why would he be looking for him, and why would he need to go to the dad's son who hadn't spoken to him or seen him in over 20 years? Now wouldn't a friend know enough about the guy to know he didn't stay in contact with his son? And how did he find Ned?
All verrry fishy and mysterious! The mystery only continued as Chuck and Olive discovered not Ned's father at the address Ned had from years earlier for his dad, but Ned's half-brothers, who'd also been abandoned by their father. Chuck and Olive revealed to Ned that he had two adorable twin half-brothers who had his eyebrows, and Ned decided, against his desire to not make his father happy, to meet these brothers. But when he did, we scanned back to see Dwight sitting in a car across the street with a gun in the passenger seat! Dun, dun, dun!
And I thought death by pork bun steamer was going to be the drama of the evening!
While it's clear this Dwight is up to something troubling, I hope it's something like Ned's dad owes him money, or is otherwise in trouble with Dwight or someone Dwight works for, so Dwight is following Ned only to try to find the father. I hope this investigation doesn't include making up fake brothers for Ned as after meeting those brothers who were so adorable that they immediately gave Ned a big double hug, it would be heartbreaking to see Ned finally get some good family, and then discover it was all made up.
Next episode includes Ned's new half-brothers as they dive into mysterious murders around a magic show, which is the twins' hobby/career, so I'm hoping this will also reveal more about Ned's family situation!
