Lost 5.14: 'The Variable' Review - Featured

One of the greatest things about Lost is how it allows fans to get excited about making predictions, then give us episodes like 'The Variable' that seem to lead to our predictions... then at the same time, shock us with all the, shall we say, variables, of the means to that end!

Okay, in non-confusing Lost terms? My prediction since this time traveling began was that the series end next year would be that they were indeed able to change the past to the point that everything that happened on the island for our Oceanic 815 survivors never happened, and we'd be left in the series finale with everyone in their proper lives, but don't know each other because the plane crash never happened.

And now with this episode, it seems entirely possible, and yet impossible that that could happen. As for the shockers? Well, that would be those moments like Daniel's mother shooting him in the 1970's on the island she sent him to in the "future," knowing full-well what happened to him on that island.

My head hurts. I'm hoping all these headaches will lead to some of my prediction coming true, but honestly, besides the joy of being right, I'd rather the end of all this not be that the survivors are able to change the past/future and never crashed. That's basically the same as reading a great book and having the final chapter say, "and then he woke up, and it was all a dream." Even if it was an amazing story, that kind of ending destroys the entire thing, and I feel like the survivors never having these island experiences would be much like that.

Also, in the first few seasons, a lot of the plot was around the survivors' backstories and how before they'd ended up on the island, their lives had become disastrous, and they needed the island to find their way in life. So if they never crash, aren't they then destined to continue to live their lives that they hate, or that are leading them to jail, or other horrible things?

Well, while all this may end up being the case, we're also still in the second to last season and not the final season, so it doesn't seem very reasonable that it would take an entire season to develop what looks to be ready to happen in the final episodes this season.

It looks as if the next few episodes will be Jack trying to be the hero again after the death of poor Danny boy, leaving Jack and Kate to figure out Daniel's notebook to change the future. Can they do it??

Well, my guess is going to be no, or at least not yet, but the revelations around this possibility were pretty awesome in this episode. To finally get further clarity on the hatch was pretty fantastic - we already knew most of the story including that it was what made the plane crash, but putting together the entire timeline of how that happened was pretty cool. Also, it was a crazy moment to hear Widmore say to Daniel's mother that he was Daniel's father!

So Penny has a half-brother who sent her husband back to this forsaken island... and it seems as if Daniel had no idea how he was connected to Widmore or Desmond. But because Lost is completely awesome, I'm hoping there will be more revelations around these connections, much like there still seems to be more to come around Jack and Claire's familial connection.

So now we're left to wonder what will happen to Sawyer and Juliet captured by Dharma, plus what will happen to Hurley and Miles left standing around, and also of course, what will happen as Jack and Kate try to decipher Daniel's notebook to change their futures. So much to look forward to in the final two episodes of the season!

So what do you think will go down in these last episodes? Will we get any sort of wrap up to the time traveling this season, or do you expect a massive and unsatisfying cliffhanger for the finale?

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kendra for the reviews. I look forward to reading them each week!! Keep up the good work.
Coming back to Lost epi 14: Awesome episode - the shock tactics seems to get better with each episode. I was shaken to the core with the revelation that Dan was Widmore's son (Never saw that coming, despite wondering WHO could be Dan's father!), and more over was reeling from the after-shocks of the revelation that it was Elie, his own mother that kills him!!!!! Lost never ceases to amaze its viewers.
Moreover, the burning question is will Kate's stupidity defeat the objective of getting the hydrogen bomb to destroy the energy???? Will Jack listen to her or stand on his own two feet to take charge?Fingers crossed - personally I think the idea that they go back to their own lives and never meet as the crash never happened, seem more likely the path the directors are going to take. We've seen what happened to them off the Island (after they met), now lets see what happens to them if they never came to the island. To me it is very reminiscent of that Gwyneth Paltrow movie 'Sliding Doors'.
Also - who are these new people??? There is a school of thought that the new characters (Bram, Ceaser, Illana) are children of some of the people who were gassed ruthlessly by Ben Linus in the 90's and are back here on the island to find answers. It is the time of the LOST children! Dan can 'make time', Charlotte had linguistic capabilities while Miles can talk to the dead - may be these new 'yahoos' as Sawyer would call them, could possess powers beyond our imagination!!!!!!!!!!!
What about Richard Alpert- that ageless being - where does he fit in to all of this!????
So many questions yet to be answered.....Oooo.....this is just too much!Looking forward to the ending of this series.

I don't think that they can change the future.
I belive that they will cause the incident by using the neutron bomb. And by that I think they just gonna shift back to their time.
Simultaniusly of course Locke and that gang might do sth, so that the two things happening together will cause it.
I think that will be the cliffhanger for this season, a giant shining flash with the bomb exploded and at the same moment sth happen in the present...BAM... that's it
Is next season really the end of Lost????
If yes I would really love to see some explanation of the dead people appearing everywhere stuff and of course JACOB!!!!!!!!

i know this will sound crazy, but when dan had his memory problems i think it was that his brain was traveling through time, so when it traveled to the past, he didnt know where he was, and i think this was the effect of the time travelling, because when for example, he was in 2003 on the island and in 2003 in his house, his brain would go nuts. just an idea.

I am SO boggled about season 5 & 6. I have been faithful for so long. I pray that it wasn't all for nothing. So far though Lost has had me laughing, pissed off, in love, scared, excited, confused, mis-led, justified, and in tears. It hasn't failed to keep me on the edge of my seat, conversating the entire way through with my equally obsessed sister about the outcome of each character, and their situations. It has been one hell of a ride.
I too NEED to know who the hell JACOB is.
Richard.
Why did Charlotte die!! What was the point of her being on the Island as a child and then Daniel telling her not to come back cause she'll die, but ultimately she does, and dies anyway...¿?
Micheal? Walt? How do they tie in? So far it's been a dead end. Maybe Micheal will return as a 'ghost'? But what is the significance of Walt's abilities. And still never returning to the Island... and when they were returning to the Island... they needed the plane to be almost exact to the first crash. Well, Locke had just seen Walt and in no way tried to recruit him back on the plane... Hmm?
Widmore? So far we keep seeing various timelines about him, and now he's Daniel's father? Just still in the dark as to how he plays into all of this.
Love, love, love the Dharma Initiative and all of their prehistoric buildings... well now their not so old since most of the storyline is taking place in the 70's at this point. And even some of the building havn't even been built yet, like the Hatch. But how do they tie in? What was the point of Dharma? Okay, they are researching the energy of the Island? Or the mysticality of the Island? Is mysticality a word? LOL!
Charlie? Okay he was significant until, what!? Season 3? Then shows up dead, just telling Hurley to go back to the Island?
And Christian Shephard, Claire, her mom, and Jack and his mom...
How do all of these characters tie in? Is anyone going to be left out? Like Rose and Bernard? Or Boone and Shannon? Mr. Ecko? Anna Lucia?? The significance? The POINT???I pray this show isn't a let down?
Oh and where the hell did Sayid run off to? Just away into the jungle...I'm putting my faith into the hands of Abrams, Lindelof, Cuse, and Lieber...Don't let us down guys.

I also heard a long time ago, before season 5 even began, that we will see Charlie. My guess is that he'll be in the finale along with Jacob. I forgot all about this until SoWeirdBoy mentioned Charlie.

I don't think Daniels dead because he was already healed once before by the Island (from his mental condition) and I think the Island will heal him once again.

i am surprised you guys have missed some of the cool things we hopefully will find out soon like what lies in the shadow of the statue? who are these people? Others? New Dharma? i like the new Dharma because it kind of reminds me of when Desmond asked Locke what one snow man says to the other snowman. And what was in the box they had? a friend of mine pointed out they were carrying it like the ark of the covenant with sticks and not touching it.
i am far more interested in the present time with Locke Ben and Sun.... Well Locke and Ben anyway. Jack is just gonna mess things up in the past anyway. He is always fighting against the island and should really listen to Locke and Sawyer more.
If they stop them from ever going to the island i will be mad. It is their destiny to go and Locke's destiny to lead the others.
O, and I'm glad Dan is dead. He sucked. He was a constantly lying and he was another one of those guys who was fighting the island. I do like the idea of Dan Charlotte and Miles being born on the island and thats why they have their special powers. I wonder what that means for Arron? Or Suns daughter conceived on the island?
Anyway these are my thoughts. Take them or leave them. Ether way i dont really care.
You never should have left the island.Go Team Locke!!!
