One of the greatest things about Lost is how it allows fans to get excited about making predictions, then give us episodes like 'The Variable' that seem to lead to our predictions... then at the same time, shock us with all the, shall we say, variables, of the means to that end!
Okay, in non-confusing Lost terms? My prediction since this time traveling began was that the series end next year would be that they were indeed able to change the past to the point that everything that happened on the island for our Oceanic 815 survivors never happened, and we'd be left in the series finale with everyone in their proper lives, but don't know each other because the plane crash never happened.
And now with this episode, it seems entirely possible, and yet impossible that that could happen. As for the shockers? Well, that would be those moments like Daniel's mother shooting him in the 1970's on the island she sent him to in the "future," knowing full-well what happened to him on that island.
My head hurts. I'm hoping all these headaches will lead to some of my prediction coming true, but honestly, besides the joy of being right, I'd rather the end of all this not be that the survivors are able to change the past/future and never crashed. That's basically the same as reading a great book and having the final chapter say, "and then he woke up, and it was all a dream." Even if it was an amazing story, that kind of ending destroys the entire thing, and I feel like the survivors never having these island experiences would be much like that.
Also, in the first few seasons, a lot of the plot was around the survivors' backstories and how before they'd ended up on the island, their lives had become disastrous, and they needed the island to find their way in life. So if they never crash, aren't they then destined to continue to live their lives that they hate, or that are leading them to jail, or other horrible things?
Well, while all this may end up being the case, we're also still in the second to last season and not the final season, so it doesn't seem very reasonable that it would take an entire season to develop what looks to be ready to happen in the final episodes this season.
It looks as if the next few episodes will be Jack trying to be the hero again after the death of poor Danny boy, leaving Jack and Kate to figure out Daniel's notebook to change the future. Can they do it??
Well, my guess is going to be no, or at least not yet, but the revelations around this possibility were pretty awesome in this episode. To finally get further clarity on the hatch was pretty fantastic - we already knew most of the story including that it was what made the plane crash, but putting together the entire timeline of how that happened was pretty cool. Also, it was a crazy moment to hear Widmore say to Daniel's mother that he was Daniel's father!
So Penny has a half-brother who sent her husband back to this forsaken island... and it seems as if Daniel had no idea how he was connected to Widmore or Desmond. But because Lost is completely awesome, I'm hoping there will be more revelations around these connections, much like there still seems to be more to come around Jack and Claire's familial connection.
So now we're left to wonder what will happen to Sawyer and Juliet captured by Dharma, plus what will happen to Hurley and Miles left standing around, and also of course, what will happen as Jack and Kate try to decipher Daniel's notebook to change their futures. So much to look forward to in the final two episodes of the season!
So what do you think will go down in these last episodes? Will we get any sort of wrap up to the time traveling this season, or do you expect a massive and unsatisfying cliffhanger for the finale?
