Heroes has been struggling in viewership since Season 2's loss of many fans' interest due to too many new character stories and also the big break because of the writers' strike.
The Season 3 premiere was promoted very prominently, but still didn't deliver as well as NBC and the Heroes cast and crew were hoping. While the Season 2 December 2007 finale brought in 11.06 million viewers, the Season 3 September 2008 premiere brought 9.89 million for the full 2-hour event, and after the premiere, only dropped through the midseason finale which brought in 7.78. Also note that Season 2 started out with 16.97 million then dropped to 11.96 by the second episode, and only went down from there, then jumped back up a bit for that 11.06 finale... really makes that 7.78 sting a bit!
