Smallville: Season 8, Episode 1 - Odyssey (Review)

I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the season premiere of Smallville. How could a show possibly go on after simultaneously losing two of their major characters? But I actually think they pulled it off. I liked this episode.

Inevitably, there were some new faces to fill the void left by Lex and Lana (Mainly Lex). Tess Mercer, the lady left behind to look after Lex's company does seem like the kind of person you don't want to cross. Especially in the wake of Regan (another power hungry Luthorcorp employee) going 'missing'. Within the episode they told us she is worse than Lex, but I think with watching 7 years of Lex Luthor ruining peoples lives I will have to see it to believe it. I do however, forsee a lot of battles between her and Lois, which I think Lois is more than ready for. Lois over the years has become one of my favourite characters so I am definitely looking forward to a bit more of the Lane this season.

Although this wasn't exactly the most action packed episode of Smallville, I could sort of tell they were laying the foundations for the season as well as wrapping up some loose ends from the last. We did have Oliver and Clark beating each other up though which I rather enjoyed, especially with Clark sporting the wet look (I think its the hair that does it...). It was nice to see Chloe back in one piece too... in fact more than one piece, she is now super intelligent! I suppose thats going to factor in along the season although Chloe was always really smart so it can't be that big a deal surely...

Clark being almost killed by Oliver was an interesting scenario too, and I was impressed by the special effects there - looked painful though. But of course, he didn't die. And his kryptonian friend sacraficed his powers for Clark's destiny. I definitely think the message of this episode was the fact that Clark is pretty much alone now and that he is for the first time actually ready. I thought Clark saying that he never actually said goodbye was very true to all the losses he has had over the years, and so I thought that was a good scene. It very much felt like he was almost saying goodbye to the last 7 seasons due to the fact I think this one is going to be very different.

Probably the only thing that made me groan about this episode was seeing Jimmy right at the end. Needless to say, I have not exactly ever been his biggest fan - at least of the Smallville version. I just don't like how they have made him, and I don't like him with Chloe either... she can do better.

Other than that, I thought it was a good episode and a nice start to the season. It looks like I got my wish too, with more classic Clark moments... him at the Daily Planet and even a mention of a homemade suit! It will be interesting to see how this season goes, but in my eyes its looking good.

I totally agree with the review, and it seems to me the direction is going to be Justice League... wonder if there is a possibility that the Dark Knight would be introduce somewhere in the future...

The review was pretty good, but one quibble, J'onn J'onnz is not a Kryptonian, he is a Martian. As for why he lost his powers helping Clark, that seriously needs to be addressed! How did it happen & where did it happen? Many people are still not satisfied for never learning how Clark got his powers back in "Superman II". I know I still wonder how this was accomplished since Lara clearly stated that once he gave them up, there would be no turning back, but later when he finds the green crystal, the scene fades away & the next thing we know, Superman is back with his powers & no explanation is given. I don't want to see this give viewers any valid reason to complain, so I hope there is an explanation later in the series. Another complaint is that even though we saw Kara getting trapped in the Phantom Zone last season, noone even so much as mentions her that I could see, & this needs to be addressed as well. I know Laura VanderVoort didn't renew her contract for this season & will only be doing guest appearances, but this needs to be cleared up carefully & quickly before the other upcoming episodes get to far along & this question is forgotten! My only other complaint is in how the guest stars are portrayed. A.C. doesn't really seem like he HAD to be here & I'm sorry but the Black Canary needs to be redesigned. While Alaina seems to do alright from an acting standpoint, her physical appearance needs to be given an overhaul. The make-up as a mask is dreadful & the sound effect for her "Canary Cry" needs more work, visually it's fine but it just doesn't sound right! The sound effect used in the now-defunct "Birds of Prey" was much better so they should try to find that sound & use it here! As for (Justin) Ollie, I really like him as Green Arrow alot! He seems to be having fun with this character & it shows! I am happy that he will be a regular this season, if nothing else, Clark will need someone to help him in matters of finance & connections with Lana & her oodles of embezzled money no longer available to him, unless by some chance she made Clark her beneficiary or executor before she was admitted into the Psych ward! I also like Cassidy Freeman as Tess Mercer, she seems formidable enough to give Clark & Lois a hard time if the confrontation between her & Lois is any indication! I don't know if anyone else realizes that she seems to be a fusion of Mercy Graves, Lex's bodyguard from the animated series & the Contessa Portia de la Portenza, Lex's ex-wife & mother of his daughter Lena in the comics. (conTESSa + MERCy= Tess Mercer!) It is quite clever, actually! So all in all, it looks like a promising start & I hope the new cast members can fill the spaces left for them by Michael, Kristin, & Laura, it will be no easy feat, so I wish them much luck & success in this endeavor! Bye, now!;-)

I've also heard news that the long-awaited(by me at least!) appearance of the Legion of Superheroes will be making their live-action debut this season! YAAAY!, I've been wanting to see this happen for the last couple of seasons & it finally looks like it will now be done! But when? Now if there were only someway we could get a young Bruce Wayne & Princess Diana to somehow make an appearance, I would be a totally happy camper!;-)

Haha sorry my bad... when I was writing the review I totally couldn't even remember the guys name or where he was from so I took a leap - should of checked. I didn't much like the season were he made an appearance; thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it! Anyway, I know I thought the same thing about Clark's powers. I also thought that if the Martian lost his powers when he went to the sun to heal Clark, then how the hell did he manage to fly back again! So that was my quibble! No I think we have all longingly awaited the Legion of Superheroes but I am not going to get excited till I see it for myself! Its Bruce Wayne I want to see...
I love the Green Arrow, so I am so glad he is back this season. Not too fussed on the rest of them though. But I am really happy Kara isn't coming back permanantly, I just couldn't warm to her last season. While everyone was like, "OMG! How will she get her powers and memory back!" etc I was more like, "Who cares!". But I suppose thats just me. Its strange because I really thought I would like her, but I guess there are so many other great strong feminine characters on the show that I didn't feel the need to like her. I'm not going to say I like or dislike Tess Mercer yet... We will see what menacing acts she cooks up next episode first. All in all though, I agree... promising start. Although, please someone send Jimmy to a far away place.

I would assume that the Martian's power wasn't instantaneously stripped a few should be there to take Clark home.
I didn't really like the character Kara.. and I suppose a smallville spin-off is more appropriate for her..

Nice...but it seems that Clark loses his powers often within the last few seasons. Which is getting slightly boring, Cant wait for them to introduce doomsday. I say he needs more strong opponents so he can finally unleash all that power he has lurking in their. Also Brainiac Chloe interesting, I wonder when he will reveal himself in this season.

its seems like when brainiac sought to zombify chloe, her meteor healing ability intercepted the "virus" and somehow allowed her to tap into brainiac's mind. i think her ability, by healing her of brainiac's attempted body snatching, also absorbed some electrical stimulation, opening up her mind so to speak. brainiac seemed to be baffled and weakened by the reaction chloe's body made to his attempt at engaging the human host, and so he had to go recharge at that power station where clark beat him down mid-juicing. brainiac as usual tho, had that last smirk on his face, suggesting he will return again... but i think a download to chloe is a bit too obvious way to do it, especially if she is openly exhibiting extraordinary intelligence.
there is a definite new tone evident in this season opener. clark carries himself with a refreshing air of confidence, bordering on cockiness by barely a blurred super step. he seems more aware almost, more certain of what needs to be done and who needs to get it done. there has been a necessary build-up of love, loss and pain over the last 7 epic years, to create the superman he needs to be. i expect great things from this last season, however remain skeptical about doomsday's early introduction... but if the rumors i hear turn truth about his twisting tale, i'll be the first to say spot on Smallville.. spot on.

The reason the martian lost his powers is because fire is his weakness. Getting back to earth though is something else.
