Smallville Review: Season 8 Episode 18 - Eternal - Featured

Eternal was finally what I wanted from Smallville. An episode that had huge story development while still being an exciting episode that wasn't completely lacking light. Davis 'died' and then as I expected, and to be honest hoped, miraculously came back to life. Tess was being her lovely devious self and Clark was rather annoyingly denying everything. And then we had Chloe being forced to make a decision that could ultimately save or destroy Clark... and even the world.

Tess was my favourite aspect of this episode. I couldn't help thinking she was speaking sense, even if she was misguided a tad (or a lot) in her approach. Clark does need to face his biggest challenge before he can become superman. And I felt as though it was the writers almost telling us that 'no he isn't quite there yet' to all us eager viewers. Clark annoyed me in this episode. Tess knows for a fact who Clark is, and has told him that. And I just wish he would stop denying it as let's be honest it is futile. If he was to be honest with Tess then maybe she would be with him, and would take a better approach. I still don't believe she is completely bad, and her actions are justified in her own twisted way.

I must admit, for the split second I thought Davis was dead - I was annoyed. Had he died it would have been a complete anticlimax. So when he reappeared I was actually really glad. I did feel sorry for Chloe. Yes she was a bit dim in not recognising there was something seriously wrong with him. However her decision was a horrible one. First she had to decide whether to kill him, and possibly save Clark. Then she had to chose between Davis becoming his true self or staying with him so he represses the beast. I don't know about any one else, but hanging out with a serial killer and omnipotent destroyer of the world doesn't exactly sound like a thing I would want to do. At the same time though, I think she still has feelings for him and it took almost losing him to see that.

Overall, this episode lived up to the hype. It was exciting and developed the story really well. I cannot wait to see Clark and Doomsday finally fight as I know it will be extremely explosive and a great way to end a unexpectedly good season.

Yeah I am fairly sure it was the device that controls Clark. Although that did contradict what she had said all episode I thought...

I suppose she has it incase clark decides to do his noble act of not killing anyone - what always amazis me is that fact he hasnt really killed anyone - u'd think with all the flinging people against walls they would die and not just end up in hospital for either chloe, lex/tess or oliver to kill. I had completly forgot about the controling device thing!!!
great epsiode though i feel awful for Chloe, and I agree with you that it would be crap to live with a destroyer, who ruined your wedding, put ur husband in the hospital, broke u n ur husband up and has the potential to kill your best mate!! not the best.

i hate the fact that you can tell that the writers are writing chloe as blind and stupid to davis. she was the reporter who broke the news that the highschool football coach was a firestarter. and now she cant even tell that the dude with no past and glowing red eyes and admittadly kills people is probably some extreemly bad news. chloe isnt stupid and they need to stop writing her as blissfully abject to davis' doomsdailyness

Really, really good episode!! :)
And hey, you don't have to feel that sorry for Chloe. Her choice sucked no doubt, but at least.. Davis is hot like hell! (When he's not a monster).
I was wondering though... Doesn't Doomsday kill Clark? If he does, wouldn't it be way too early to let them fight? If Clark dies before he becomes Superman, there won't be any Superman... I'm confused... And properly stupid too.. Can anyone shed some light on this? :)

exactly, i love Clark as we all do but Davis is very sexy, brooding and torn. I was glad when he didn't die. Regarding Clark and his secret, Tess is Lex's protegy and despite realising he put a camera inside her she still to a certain extent does his bidding, it would be unwise of Clark to trust her so easily, by admitting to her the truth he is putting his life in her hands. I doubt Tess would want him to become superman and have free rein, she and the Luthors would probably want to use his abilities for their own ends and thus control him. Admitting the truth to her would be dangerous and unwise. I understand why he lied. I'm not sure I want Doomsday destroyed in the finale of this season. I have heard there is a ninth coming up and I would like to see the battle between the Superman and the only creature who ever kills him go further than just one episode, albeit a finale. I also love Chloe and Davis together, which is unfortunate really since their relationship is doomed. I'm a bit irritated that Lois had no part in this episode, it seems that Lois and Chloe are too dominating as female leads to have powerful roles in the same episode. I personally think Lois ought to know Clark's secret. I love Chloe with more depth and maturity like she has shown here, Allison Mack is an exceptional actress and her character is more often than not underrated, perhaps because she is not the "typical" attractive female that Lois and Lana were. Nevertheless I like her female character best and she excelled in this episode.

In regard to megjopol's "what always amazis me is that fact he hasnt really killed anyone", for the longest time I refused to watch Smallville because in the early seasons it seemed to me that someone died in every episode ("meteor-freaks" fighting Clark) and I just couldn't reconcile that with what I knew to be the story of Superman.
As it is, I'm glad I finally did make it past those initial seasons because I'm really excited to see what happens next!
...here's one more thing, though: if that thing Tess had at the end really was the device to "control" Clark, wasn't it just a trigger and the actual powerhouse was the fortress? Isn't it obsolete now that the fortress is "dead"?

That is a good point kthln. I do suppose you would need the fortress as well. I understand the writers wanted us to be kind of like "Oh what's Tess up to now...?" but I feel like they should have made it more obvious what the device she had was and what her intentions are as we all see quite unsure and even confused about it!

I hope this Davis v Clark fight scene is very big and spectacular. I have a feeling that Clark is gonna lose the fight scene but then realise that fire is Doomsday's weekness......Tess will probably tell him that.Tess is starting to seem way possessed of lately. By the way what happened to Lionel? how did he leave smallville?

By lore Doomsday does kill superman however i do not know how the writers will play this one out. And what tess was holding can only be used in the fortress "but how many times have we heard that", the doomsday battle should be the highlight of smallville this season as nothing as yet as really happend and since the watch tower was not metioned at all this esp all seems quite on the super hero front. Sum it up Doomsday & Brainiac are supermans biggest fights lets just hope the writers dont let us down.

1. To be fair to the writers about Chloe, love does blind some people who refuse to see the bad in people. Chloe had no connections with say the firestarter football coach but however she feels very strong about Davis? Idk just a scenario to play with.
2. Is it true that Doomsday kills Superman? Don't the DC writers just bring him back later?

yeah doomsday is meant to kill superman but as for the device tess was holding wasnt that just meant to control the "traveler" so if there are 2 travelers now maybe it holds the key how he defeats doomsday???

oh and as for the chloe davis thing i was thinking maybe chloe has the calming affect on him due to her meteor powers even though they where apparently lost when she was taken over by braniac maybe there is some residue of them there that helps keep davis normal!!!!!

I think they're just in love, and they always talk about how the human emotions are what make them human and all, so I believe there's nothing else to it...
Now about Clark dieing... I know I'm repeating here but the same person who said he dies also said that Doomsday will be defeated BY him, so I'm really not making any sense out of this. I want just a simple answer. Is Clark going to die or not?

I think chloe's being portrayed to be some bimbo who's fallen for a handsome face. sooooooo not cool. Isn't the fortress back though? Clark got brainiac out of chloe then brainiac infected the fortress then davis took chloe to the fortress and she got all brainiac'd again until those chucks and clark removed it AGAIN.... so aye. the fortress is back so Tess could use the device on clark if necessary.
I hate living in scotland btw, have to wait up all night just to watch the new episodes as they come out online. HATE the fact that they keep taking loooong breaks between episodes as well.
But aye, the writers need to do something about Chloe as although she's not one the original DC crew she's one of the best characters in the show and cannot continue to be shown as some girl who swoons over a handsome face....
