Smallville Review: Season 8 Episode 10 - Bride

The episode 'Bride' for me was nothing if not extremely emotionally heavy. Realistically, we all knew this episode was one to look out for in the 8th season of Smallville. Not only was it the wedding of one Chloe Sullivan but it also saw the return of Lana Lang. Throw into the mix a terrifying encounter with Doomsday and you have a firecracker of an episode.

First, to Doomsday. Although I found his attack on the wedding party horrible and I hoped no one was going to get hurt, it is finally good to see him out in the open and in his full Doomsday form. As I said last week, I thought that Chloe was either going to die at his hands, or be his only connection to his humanity. And in some way, it was both. Although Doomsday didn't kill Chloe, he injured (and possibly killed) many people to get to her yet still managed to usher her name and take her to the fortress safely. What he is going to do with her now is a puzzling question, but even more puzzling was her smile at him when she woke up to find him over her. Was that a delirious moment were she could think only of her wedding to Jimmy or was it something far more sinister? Has Doomsday somehow managed to find a hold over her? Right now, I honestly don't know...

Lana's return was something (I'll be honest) I have been looking forward to since the spoiler mill went into overdrive and (despite me not wanting to know) I found out. Don't get me wrong, I was glad when Lana left. She had no purpose any more and I didn't like how her character had changed into someone I really didn't quite like. That being said, the soap opera fan in me wanted the drama that was inevitably going to occur when she turned up. And I don't think I was disappointed. However I must admit I am torn. Yes I did want the drama, but this newly formed Clois shipper was also scowling at the television when Lana turned up just in time to ruin what was about to be a passionate kiss between Clark and Lois. We all know how Lois feels for Clark, yet it is highly frustrating for me when we haven't really seen much of how he feels for her. Also, Lois looked hurt, not just at Chloe's abduction but at Clark. In reality, Clark has done nothing wrong yet I sense that in this episode their relationship took one step forward and about five back. We will see how things develop but with Lois going with Jimmy to star city, the outlook on their relationship isn't looking great.

Also interesting about Lana's reappearance was that she lied to Oliver about her thinking Lex is dead. That coupled with mysterious texting and then a bald headed man sitting in front of a screen which is playing Chloe's eventful wedding video tells me there is a lot more to come on the Lex front. However, what was with all the strange wires that were surrounding him? Perhaps the fortress had more of an effect on him then anyone realised... That being said, I don't see why Lana would ever go back to helping him. She isn't the Lana we all knew 3 or 4 seasons ago but she hated Lex for a good proportion of the last season and I don't understand why she would go there again. That's another mystery...

I suppose this episode raised far more questions than answers. But that is what you want to happen right in the middle of the season. We have had the fun episodes with one ep villains, and Clark saving the day. And we have had the plot carrying episodes which led to 'Bride'. And now I feel I am at a point were I have no clue were the season is going to go. But that is exciting. Excitement is what a show like Smallville should really be providing.

Overall, a really good episode. It was dark yet not completely lacking light and it left me feeling like I urgently need another installment. Roll on Thursday...

I got back early (workshop was rubbish...). Oh yeah forgot about little pesky Brainiac being there. Well thats a wierd scenario then... Brainiac taking over Chloe again and then Doomsday being in love with effectively Brainiac... hmmm. I can't believe I have to wait so long!!!

Also, something I didn't mention in my review - what the hell has Lana done to her hair? Not a fan I must say.

OK. SO i know smallville isnt supposed to be superman perse, rather, a depiction of what clark kent was before actually becoming the proper superman we know. right now, he already is superman, without the cape and costume of course. I used to read and watch superman cartoons back then and brainiac, just so you know, took over lex. Why was lex in all those cables etc? cause he now is brainiac. doomsday was cool. lana works for either the martian or the new head of luthorcorp. at least thats my theory,

I like Joivomi´s review. But I have to say the love look between Clark and Lois seemed unreal to me, meanwhile the scenes with Clark and Lana were vibrant with emotion. I know the decor and music help, but I can´t help feeling that there is something more profound between these two characters, maybe the actors themselves. Clark is attracted to Lois, he likes her for her frankness but she is too blunt at times, there is no mystery at all. I believe his twin soul is Lana.I loved Kristin´s acting, she is really special and I did miss her this season. Thanks to Smallville´s writers to re introduce her and please all Clana lovers. I have enjoyed Season 8 so far, but this is the only episode I will be watching more than a couple of times, and still feel emotional about it the next day...I loved seeing Clark and Lana together, hate that they should be apart.

has anyone noticed how grown up smallville has gotten compared to earlier seasons lol i love it :)!! all i can say is wow, what an episode!! i was almost in tears at one point!! if there was anything possible at all bad to say at all about that episode it was that clark never reli used his powers once, but uno what, i dont care at all, fantastic episode!!
smallville isnt just a superhero show, its soo much more, its brilliant, the writers are amazing!!!
i really dont like lana anymore, cant trust her, ruined clark and lois kiss, and is jus really anoying! the show is far better without her :), altho i do like her hair :P lol!
one last thing, when is he going to put on the cape!!!!!! i watch every episode with my fingers crossed saying put on the cape!!!!! were sooooooo close, back in the ep identity we were sooo close!!! i want superman!!

Braniac has been reactivated in Chloe now that she is in the fortress, hence the smile.
Lana shouldn't have come back.
Doomsday.....well.....i guess its an ok depiction, but his human love for Chloe will be his undoing.
Lois' expressions towards Clark were very cute and so unlike her outer character so far. She is definately a tsundere, as the japanese would describe her.

Well i guess Having Chloe become the vessel/tool of Brainiac to control Doomsday certainly makes it interesting to see how Clark handles it. Also given that Clark was pretty much out powered by Doomsday how do you think he is going to defeat him? If he's not as strong? will he need to take control of his full powers maybe turn into his Kryptonian self kal-el who if i remember was alot more focused about getting the job done? Seems if we got to wait till Jan then they have left us all with a great episode and lots of questions.

I thought Lois was weirdly vulnerable in this episode, almost nothing like her usual sarcastic blunt self. I wonder if they did that on purpose?
It does seem as though Brainiac is kind of controling Doomsday...and that Chloe became reinfected at the fortress....but I don't understand why Doomsday would want Chloe to be infected with Brainiac??? He loves her. To be honest, I like Doomsday and Chloe more than Chloe and Jimmy. Either way I can't wait till January!!

All i can really say is wow if someone had told me last year that smallville would get interesting and entertaining again i would have said this show needs to be canceled. However this eight season has really redeemed the show and i believe the plot is heading for a League on Doom with all the villains working under Lex. Can't wait for the rest of this season 8 weeks is a long time but at least i'll have Heroes as company for the next 2 weeks

I Agree Lois was a little loved up in this episode not her usual self assured somewhat aggressive self. Still it did show she was capable of caring for Clark, and opening when she needs too.Well i think Doomsday took Chloe there to allow brainiac to take full control of her, as i remember Doomsday really was all about destruction in the comic. So i think Brainiac is using Chloe to create some kind of bond to use to control Doomsday, so he can build this new world/era, he went on about in the previous episode. I actually think Davis does not want to do any damage but that the creature inside really ain't giving him a choice and that what he feels for Chloe is his contact to humanity.
No idea if its Lex or whoever but seems that Clark is going to have his hands full this season.

"yet it is highly frustrating for me when we haven't really seen much of how he feels for her" I couldnt agree more. Also, i agree with "Lois looked hurt, not just at Chloe's abduction but at Clark. In reality, Clark has done nothing wrong yet I sense that in this episode their relationship took one step forward and about five back" Clark definitely needs to start doing some wooing on his side, big time.

i think Clark is distancing himself from Lois because of what happened to Chloe and Lana. Hes reluctant to get close to someone since people that get close to him get hurt. Also hes probably still hurting from what Lana did, although this episode would seem to be closure to that period in his life. On another note when are we going to see the Flash again. That was my favorite episode.

For all of those who aren't or havent been caught up on the life and times of Kal-El. You have to understand that Doomsday is connected not to Chloe but to Braniac. Its not that Davis transformed still harbored feelings for Chloe its a tie that each other shares beyond love.. That Krypton shit.. so to speak. Now as for Lex Luthor, He gets hurt (heart problems) when the fortress falls but for being the vessel of Zod he is and will be kept alive and well. the wires hooked up to him are those of his secret lair or hideout.. whatever. We will soon see the beginning of the Justice league and their enemies. the Next season if not next few seasons should be crazy, as we see Clark develop his flying powers and learn from the LEGION the fate of the future world.
Just a quick briefing..
Good day and good watching

Awsome review... I didn't realise that so many people watched smallville... each episode get better an better in the 8th season. I don't know if you guys noticed but the wires lex was bound with when that scene emerged was the kryptonian sign for DOOM... thats what struck me at first... from what i read isn't doomsday the only one to kill superman.. and has there been any conformation of additional seasons..clark really needs to start flying... and lana looked hott !!
