Smallville Review: Season 8 Episode 7 - Identity

This weeks Smallville episode, 'Identity' was far more my type of Smallville episode when compared to last week's. Not only was it a lot lighter, and in my mind exciting but I also found it rather revealing for several characters. We had Clark fighting to keep his secret after Jimmy discovers he is not who he says, and Lois fighting for her life...

However, the big shocker of the week was Chloe. Recently I have been saying how much Chloe has changed this season - almost unrealistically so. People, in my opinion don't just go from young and eager journalist to someone with the mindset of a forty year old foster parent. This week we saw a different turn of events, with Chloe taking a far more sinister turn. While she was undoubtedly trying to protect Clark's secret, I couldn't help feel some sort of menace as she caused Wilson to have a stroke and erase his memories. Afterwards, there did seem some sort of remorse on her face, but she still allowed herself on a path not traveled by her before, and one that I am sure leads to much more darkness. Is the evil from Brainiac finally seeping through into Chloe's persona? It isn't looking good...

The next of the shockers this week for me was Tess. As I have mentioned before, I have found it hard to judge her entirely. While she has obviously had some shady dealings so far this season, she hasn't particularly done anything I have hated her for. In fact, I often find myself laughing at her quirky one liners. Yet this week, that changed. You don't mess with the Lane. Fair enough, bicker with her, cause her some strife... but DON'T leave the woman to die at the hands of a serial killer! Her reaction, or lack there of, was cold and immediately made my mind up about her. She is a villain, and although she may not be in Lex's league I now won't underestimate her in future episodes.

As usual, I sat eagerly awaiting some Lois/Clark action. And although there was nothing major we did have a quite sensual scene with Clark zipping up Lois' dress - to which she had a big grin on her face... I was slightly worried for Lois given that Clark was in Metropolis. I mean we know the guy can run fast but I guess I underestimated how fast he actually was.

Overall, I really quite enjoyed this episode. There was action, character development and we're getting ever so closer to Clark donning the cape. He says it won't happen... but one day, we all know it will. And that is a day I am certainly looking forward to.

Good review :)
completely agree, Chloe was rather amazing in her sudden transformation into a baddie, however, I do believe Brainiac takes over her body at some point so you are probably correct in your assumption that it was Brainiac seeping through, though I am glad something has happened eventually!! I mean having this gift had to be put into some sort of storyline, as I believe you've said previously, it was just too useful that she turned amazingly brainy!!
About Tess, I still like her, she is a bad guy after all and although we are only just beginning to see her true self, I still find her funny with her wit-isms.
Lois' face when we went back to her memory was probably one of the best clips, I love the Lois/Clark situation.
Looking forward to next weeks episode!!!

Jaivomi, I know that you've mentioned before that you feel that Chloe's transformation is really sudden, but I don't really think so. If we really pay attention to everything that's happened to Chloe, it's quite a lot. Between her mother's situation, all the insane situations she's been in protecting Clark, almost dying at least a dozen times, AND having powers that go from life saving/death inducing to super brain status to God knows what next AND trying to make the best out of all of that without really freaking out once; I think she's acting accordingly. I think the main thing is that we miss the more innocent, eager junior reporter she use to be and with reason; she was awesome. And I hate to blame the switch on Clark, but I must. All that covering for him took its toll on her work, to the point where her focus turned from her work to Clark. Not to mention that being a reporter always came naturally to her and was something to fall back on when life sucked, and then to have someone tell you daily that your work is no longer awesome, but sub-par on top of everything else.....that sucks. Even are favorites need personal revamping from time to time, or we wouldn't really see them as real people which we need to do to be pulled into the story properly.
But I love, love the darkness at the end. That last scene where she puts her gloved hands on the end of that hospital bed. I thought it was Tess or a lackie she sent to tie up loose ends, but when I saw Chloe and it all clicked what she was about to do, it was my "oh shit" moment of the episode. Wide eyed and on the edge of my seat. Loved it! I mean, our characters can't always be so squeaky clean, somethings got to give sometimes. I even loved when Lana went bad, couldn't stand how stupid she was, but I liked her more devious side (not trying to bring up the pain that was last season up, sorry guys).
Btw, Kyle Schmid showing up to play the villain of the week, made my day. I've had a crush on him since forever:)
