NOT A RIPOFF OF TWILIGHT

considering ppl are getting the wrong idea, just thought i'd mention that the book series "vampire diaries" was originally published in 1991, while twilight came out in 2005. so this is NOT a twilight ripoff. mite actually be the other way around. twilight was just so much luckier and managed to get very famous very quickly.

/hug.I love how this genre and basic plot line has been around for a very long time but now all vampire stuff is "copying twilight".
I do not doubt that this show is trying to hit on the new vampire popularity (the millions of screaming girls and ridiculous box office success is hard to ignore) but that doesn't mean it can't be new and different (or dare I say it...better!?!? :P)

everyone thinks its copying twilight because to them those type of books/movies didn't exist so there for everything they learn of after twilight is copying. morons.
no i think you can say better, vampire diaries hase a darker theme to it and unlike twilight its not predictable, in twilight its so annoying cause you can just tell whats going to happen even if you didn't read the books :P (just tell anyone or i'll get bashed by a gang of twilight loving teenage girls) =]

lol, actually I just read a series called House of Night which was pretty great (cute, funny, maybe a little teenaged high school drama-ish, but I'm a sucker for the cuteness..) and 'vampyres' were depicted in an entirely different way. Every series (of this type) has its own concept of how supernatural beings exist, and this has gone on way longer than this one popular series was written. Did I like the series, yes, and again, I'm a sucker for the happy predictable cute stuff. And do people getting all obsessive and ridiculous about it annoy me? Absolutely. xD
I hope this new series has some good drama and action.. I was saddened when they canceled Moonlight after leaving stinking cliffhangers. And taking away Josef. I love Josef!

Finally someone telling the truth about the show, i was kinda mad when i saw everyone saying they wouldint watch the show because it wa a twilight ripoff.especially since, twilight wasint that great, the books amazing, the movie... not so much. And futher more; like you said this was created way before twilight, so you could almost say that twilight is a ripoff of this show/series.
PS. does anyone know when it comes out? like an actual date?

Just watched the teaser preview of this and now I think I would actually pick up these books if I could find them in the library. Myself, I'm a fan of Darren Shan for the more light and humorous , and Anne Rice for the heavy lengthy stuff.
I haven't read Twilight, and probably won't. I did watch the film, and it was a resounding "meh". And anyway, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas in Interview with a Vampire - way hotter than thingy-whatsit lover boy in Twilight. (Edward? Was that it?)
I'll be looking out for this series to start though :)

I remember seeing these in the library a lot and though I've always been a vampire fan I never picked the books up. I think the covers put me off. I might watch the show though, at least give it a try. But I still know how annoying it is that everything has suddenly become 'Copyright Twilght' espescially considering that Twilight pretty much destroyed the vampire myth. But thats just my personal hate problems.
I'd just like to point out to Twilight fans though, a vampire being in love with a human isn't this new amazing thing, Angel and Spike both did it first. And from the looks of it so did the ones in this book series too. It's not an original idea, it's the whole forbidden love thing. Breath, and read something else.

Makes me laugh when a new book/tv show/film comes out and every one thinks how unique and fresh it is when in fact as been said before its been done to death, anyone remember dracula falling in love with mina the "original" idea, i say "original" Dracula is the earliest Vampire-Human love story I can think of, but sum1 out there will no doubt correct me.
But to Vampire Diaries I only read the books two weeks ago and where I can see similarities (vamp eating animals, 2 boys after the same girl) I don't understand how people can compare it to twilight, unless twilight is the only vampire story they've read, as Rice's books are probably the best vamp books you can read these twilight only lovers need to read more. I have nothing against the twilight books I believe they're better written then the vampire diaries and much more entertaining just that some people's comments annoy me.
I'm going to watch the tv show but I'm not expecting much, and for those people who like an original vampire mythology, I quite enjoyed Lynsay Sands Argeneau novels, who say's science can't be interesting even if the books are a bit romantic.

First of all, little kids Twilight was not the first vampire & human romance, I mean what real vampire books are you reading??? I do have all the Twilight books, big vampire fan here, and the books are better then the movies, but not like what real vampire are like... If you read interview with the vampire or books from Laurel k. Hamilton, yes kids Laurel K. Hamilton has the best and most realistic vampire books then you will ever read, this book is all about the vampire to the max and any real vampire fans would know who she is!!! so if you read her books, i doubt you can handle her vampires and she has vampire & human romance before even Twilight exist, lol which makes me laugh at how much crap you guys talk about rip of this and that with Twilight... oh any moron who even read any books on vampire romance would know that Vampire Diaries came out before Twilight, ha ha to I do have the copy of Vampire Diaries that came out in 1991, yes 1991, so who ever is out there talking about Twilight being ripped of go on the internet and look it up, plus hello anybody read DRACULA!!!!oh ya read Queen of the Damn when Lestat fell in love with a human, oh my god that was like sooooo before Twilight!!!!

L.J. Smith wrote the first Vampire Diaries book in 1991. I know, I just pulled my ORIGINAL print of The Awakening off the shelf just to check. After dealing with the cancer of one family member and the death of another she put aside writting books for a decade, leaving fans of Night World series without the last book of the series. LJS began writing again very recently, starting with short stories she put on her web site for the oldest, most dedicated fans, then moving to new chapters of the Vampire Diaries, and will soon release Strange Fate, the final Night World book. The books she has written are being REPRINTED after a decade out of print. It's really hard to find people who became fans during the original series runs, so many of us grew up, so these books can feel brand new to a brand new audience...but they aren't.

I still have my original copies of these books! I loved these books then and through many a re-reading still enjoy them as an adult. I'm so happy that they're finally doing a TV show based on the story!

After viewing a trailer for the upcoming TV series, I was intrigued and have begun reading the books. Even without the knowledge of the books being originally published in 1991, I would never call this series a rip-off of Twilight! I never really got into Twilight--to me there are just too many aspects that seem off. The Vampire Diaries, however, seem to have a lot more depth and the vampire characters are much more realistic in terms of how I am accustomed to vampires being portrayed (from Buffy, Blade, Underworld, etc.). I know there will be differences between the books and the TV series (as with any book that becomes a series or movie), but I am still excited to see it in September!

i never thought it was a rip off of twilight. i agree though that twilight might have been copied off of the original "vampire diaries" books because if you notice carefully in the trailer they say that the two have biology together. does it ring a bell??? YES! which of our favorite vampire human couple also has biology?? edward and bella. what else?? well Stefan is a vampire and i am pretty sure that Elena is not. once again it seems very familiar. twilight just became a big hit because it was the whole fact of edward cullen being the ideal man and that he was perfect in every way. i mean the vampire theme has been around forever and i bet someone else also thought of vampire romance. it really pisses me off when people just don't watch the show because it's "a twilight rip-off" if anything twilight might just be a rip off of the "vampire diaries"

If you are all so "in love" with vampires why don't you read the actual stuff and from where everything started, like the stories about Elizabeth Bathory (Countess Dracula) and Vlad Tepes(Dracula). I'm pretty sure it beats all the twilight drama...

Okay people getting welllll stressy over this...tho I do see the annoyance I couldn't stand how everyone loved the film twilight so much it was terrible and I really enjoyed the book series. Oh and who ever bought up night world thanks! Been tryin to remember the book series I had read for ages now. Think we just have to leave all the twilight fans (n no doubt theyve probs only seen the film or saw the film first) to it they've tried comparing true blood to it as well n part from the whole human vampire love thing (which like has been mentioned been done plenty of times) theres not really any similarities there...I'd rather just give the show ago and not compare it to the rest.
