doesnt this show already exist?

I admit I haven't seen the show, or heard much of it (actually, hadn't heard anything about it till just now - but isn't this almost the exact same story line as that of Psych?

Ok, so the guy admits he's not psychic, but thats the only difference I can see from the synopsis.

I feel like every show on CBS already exists. They are all slight variations of each other; some sort of crime procedural. The question is...how well done is it?For me, the only one that makes the cut is Without a Trace, which I feel like is a cut above the others; though it's the same formula they tend to mix it up and get more creative with things and also invest more time in the character development.

I know what you mean - but this is too much - If I were Psych's creator, I could definitely make a case of copy write infringement. Both main characters are super observant. Both use it to solve crimes with a police department. One currently claims while the other used to claim that they are/were psychic. So what seems to be more of a comedy and the other a drama - so what? What happened to "creative" writing?Having two shows so much alike will only lead to direct comparisons between the two, which will only lead to the cancellation of one. And one of them has already had great ratings for three (maybe four) seasons. But hey, I could be wrong.

I agree, Psych is one of the best shows to hit in a while. Everything from the writing to the way the actors interact. I love the fact that you're sitting there laughing and clearly forget that, um... someone just got murdered. It's been one of the top rated shows for ALL their seasons. I just hope someone doesn't see this show before pysch, and then not give psych the time it duly deserves.

Why are you writing a review for a show you haven't seen? Are you reviewing the show's premise?

The reason all shows exist is to take an idea and try to present it in a different, interesting way. Why can't a person enjoy both Psych and The Mentalist for whatever each has to offer. I think of it like how I think of music...I enjoy having multiple versions of the same song, but different musicians to see how each interprets and expresses it. I don't usually rule one out because I like the other, but in those that I do like I find something unique about them.
My lit professor always told us there are only a few stories really out there, but there are lots of different ways to tell them.
The person who commented about Without A Trace made a good point...it is the same formula but showing good characterization and adding its own twist to things.
Perhaps the reason its hard to find anything original is that there really isn't all that much originality in humanity. The underlying motives for human behavior date back ages...AND my theory is that we have become an over-consuming society. There is just sooooo much on television now its hard to imagine anything left to tell.
Now, so, I try to find something that takes me away from my own boring life and transports me somewhere else. To become someone else who is more clever, better looking and more successful. I want to be entertained and to care about the people in the show. I want to be distracted. So, why can't two shows about the same thing do that--one day to make me laugh when I need it, another to provide a mystery...
what is it we really want from TV anyway??

This show is a rippppp ooffffffffffffffffffff. Jesus Christ, every aspect of this show is from Psych. Seriously, that main guy in this show is just trying to be funny like Shawn. I would respect him more if he's more serious though.

Im glad someone actually agrees with me that is show is a ripoff. Psych is an awesome original show, and the mentalist's "creators" clearly used psych for the premise of the mentalist. Really sad to see a lack of creativity in a supposedly creative business. Work alittle harder on your own ideas guys, and leave psych and all the other original shows on tv alone.

I think The Mentalist is a great and so original series. Can not wait to see more of the great creative writing from this show.

Yeah The Mentalist is an ok show but it is a total rip off of Psych, except its not as funny, and his partner isnt his best friend from grade school. Psych is the best and the original....

i have never seen Psych, but have watched the mentalist, i know that i wouldn't like a show were the main character claims to be psychic which is why i like this one because it's based on science. however, has anyone else seen derrren brown? a lot of the tricks he does the mentalist does as well. such as being able to locate something by holding a persons hand, hypnosis and being able to tell if someone if lying

ok ive seen both psych and the mentalist. they are both good show in their own right, but the are not exactly the same. the only similarity there really is is the psychic connection. though shawn is currently pretending to be a psychic, using observation and patrick jane used to do it, 5 years previous to the shows current time line. he quit after his wife and child were murdered. patrck jane used observation, smarts and mental techniques. that is really the only part that matches, nothing else does. the main story line of psych is really just shawn and his buddy solving crimes using shawns observations. in the mentalist theres alot more. the main over arching story is red john, hence all the titles of the episodes having something to do with the color red. then theres the sub plots of each murder and the relationships of the cbi team(psych has the team relationships too as do all shows normally). as well as patricks mentalist abilies and his use of them to close cases. some one claimed on a another site that they highlighted what patrick saw in the pilot episode like in psych, i went back and rewatched it and that was a big negative there too. i think every one is going "oh hay patrick was a psychic" and thinks "oh another psych". nope. mentalist takes itself more seriously than psych and patrick is nothing at all like shawn. were shawn is a big goof ball, patrick is not, sure hes kinda got a child like quality about him and he has a little fun with people, but hes not a a big prat fall waiting to happen like shawn. nor is any one else in the mentalist at all comparable to psych. every ones been taking such a minor similarity and blowing it all out of whack. and beside so freaking what if patrick was a psychic and shawn is one now, enjoy the damn show and quit complaining over ones you havent even watched yet. i watch both and enjoy both, though i will confess i enjoy the mentalist more. tv is all about enjoying yourself and getting involved in the moment while you watch. so enjoy and stop compairing, it closes off the mind to other options and experiences that could very well turn out worth it.

I watch both shows. Psych is a COMEDY. Mentalist is NOT. Yes, they are both observant but the Mentalist brings 'observation' to a whole new level so its not exactly a rip off. In Psych, its made extremely clear what the viewer should be observing, in the Mentalist, its very subtle so you have to open your eyes WIDE and notice. I think both are worth watching. Psych is mainly for comedy.

I've watched both shows and nikkiz is right, The Mentalist is much more about observation. There is little to no thinking involved when watching Psych because they point out everything important you need to know, whereas in The Mentalist, the viewer is trying to figure out the crime before Patrick Jane reveals it. He never shows you what he's thinking so it is up to you to try and solve it yourself. And it is oh so rewarding when you do. Psych lacks that interactiveness that the Mentalist so readily uses.

well i like both shows and think each has there own things to give but if you really want to get picky about copying other shows psych is just as guilty of ripping off monk or columbo or sherlock holmes and many more. As all of these are based on deduction you can find simalarities in most programs of the same genre if you want to be podantic. So my advice is just enjoy what a show has to offer.
