We're eight episodes in at this stage and until the eighth I was a little worried. I can see the point of view that this show is simply a firing down a hadron collider of Star Trek Voyager and Battlestar Galatica but I think people have missed the point.....Thats awesome!!
The early days of Battlestar galactica were fantastic when it was a show about a crews survival with only each other to rely on in a lot of empty space. Similarly the best episodes of Voyager were when the crew were fighting for their very survival. But the key thing is that BSG got too up its own arse in the last two series and forgot it was supposed to be telling a story instead of giving a lesson and Star Trek, well its star trek. What this show has done is rejuvinated the Stargate phenomenon. A crew of misfits who shouldn't be there struggling to breath, drink and get home.
I think this show deserves credit, its tried to be brave, to try new things the shows never were brave enough to try before. We no longer have the purer than pure, braver than brave always doing the right thing goodies and so far we haven't seen a single baddie last longer than an episode (unless we're counting those pesky peeps back on Earth). Instead we have characters that feel more rounded, that have personalities that permeate further than their views on evil aliens.
The show has also been brave not to give us an over-arcing villain or evil race too early. Of course I hope there will be something later on but to not rely on that and keep it a survival story just shows the lengths the makers are going to to keep this show seperate from the SG world.
Episode 8 is a perfect example of this. The first part is shot completely from the view of the 'Kino's' giving it a great feel and vibe and I for one didn't see the first twist until the creatures started boring themselves through the main cast. From there I could see where the episode was going, or where I thought it would go and the last five minutes were again a great idea. We of course know the way tv land works and I was fully expecting to see them pick up the second Kino from the new past (keeping up?) and realise what they needed to do but so did everyone watching the episode. So they left it out! Brilliant! It leaves us hanging on an ending we already knew. Unless the next episode starts with them actually going to the planet (which would be a complete waste of an episode) I think this show has shown itself to have some worth.
So lets see what the do next episode....
