SGU - First 8 episode review

We're eight episodes in at this stage and until the eighth I was a little worried. I can see the point of view that this show is simply a firing down a hadron collider of Star Trek Voyager and Battlestar Galatica but I think people have missed the point.....Thats awesome!!

The early days of Battlestar galactica were fantastic when it was a show about a crews survival with only each other to rely on in a lot of empty space. Similarly the best episodes of Voyager were when the crew were fighting for their very survival. But the key thing is that BSG got too up its own arse in the last two series and forgot it was supposed to be telling a story instead of giving a lesson and Star Trek, well its star trek. What this show has done is rejuvinated the Stargate phenomenon. A crew of misfits who shouldn't be there struggling to breath, drink and get home.

I think this show deserves credit, its tried to be brave, to try new things the shows never were brave enough to try before. We no longer have the purer than pure, braver than brave always doing the right thing goodies and so far we haven't seen a single baddie last longer than an episode (unless we're counting those pesky peeps back on Earth). Instead we have characters that feel more rounded, that have personalities that permeate further than their views on evil aliens.

The show has also been brave not to give us an over-arcing villain or evil race too early. Of course I hope there will be something later on but to not rely on that and keep it a survival story just shows the lengths the makers are going to to keep this show seperate from the SG world.

Episode 8 is a perfect example of this. The first part is shot completely from the view of the 'Kino's' giving it a great feel and vibe and I for one didn't see the first twist until the creatures started boring themselves through the main cast. From there I could see where the episode was going, or where I thought it would go and the last five minutes were again a great idea. We of course know the way tv land works and I was fully expecting to see them pick up the second Kino from the new past (keeping up?) and realise what they needed to do but so did everyone watching the episode. So they left it out! Brilliant! It leaves us hanging on an ending we already knew. Unless the next episode starts with them actually going to the planet (which would be a complete waste of an episode) I think this show has shown itself to have some worth.

So lets see what the do next episode....

Yeah, episode 8 has lifted SGU out of the toilet, but let's see what happens next. I don't trust them not to go right back to sucking.

Looks like that insufferable Armstrong chick won't stay dead, which blows. SGU really endeared itself to me when they killed her off so horribly (that first time) and made her *watch*, and then killed her again (permanently, I hoped), but now it seems she'll just be back again next week, perfectly healthy and annoying the hell out of me. Booooo!

I was shocked when Chloe died again, I really want to see how she, Matthew and Eli are going to react with eachother after months of spacetravel.

Best Episode Yet?????Really?????
Now the crew of SGU isn't talking to the keno throught the show--THE KENO IS THE SHOW.I think someone at ScyFy has a keno fixation.
I wasn't going to watch anymore but all you folks give it such good reviews. Can this really be the best SGU has to offer?
One word. Lame.

I really hope they either kill scott or armstrong of and it has nothing to do with eli scott just feeles to like your typical hero character but without the humor o'neill and sheppard brought with it and wel armstrong is just plain anoying. only rush really gives me that old stargate feeling, i'm gonna go cry my self asleep again because atlantis is gone tonight (not really)

I Think that SGU is a step up. I am a huge fan of the old SG-1 crew however this new series takes a maturity step away from ridiculously large snake head warriors. the characters have a significant amount of thought going into their character from a writing point of view.
SG-1 did a great job portraying a nerd, a soldier, a scientist, and an Alien. however they had a difficulty time bringing the depth of character that SGU has already hit with a level of intensity that is clearly identifiable with a more adult audience.
The concepts of Isolation, Death, and relational discontent that is illustrated, not to mention a widely diverse cast of characters.
I am a huge fan of SG-1 however i challenge people to bring overarching concepts as mature and stylistically developed within the entirety of SG-1 that hasn't been surpassed in SGU.

Awesome Episode, Classic Stargate.
Indeed I have to say the love triangle thing is really annoying, but apart from that this show is pretty darn good.

I must say this last ep was far more of a classic star gate feel to it and I do enjoy most of the chars I fine tho out of the military personal only the commander dude the doc and the violent one that I like(and you are going to see the line about him not letting them die that's going to be a big part of his char)
